03 4runner blower problem

The blower fan on my 03 4runner (V8 LTD) quit working the other day. The mechanic said it was probably ice. They took it apart and
sure enough there was ice inside the blower (where from?) He
said they cleaned the ice out but I should order a new blower motor (back ordered) It has worked periodically since then which is real handy when it has been close to -40 here lately. By the way -40F is the same as -40C. Anyone else had this problem?

Hey Fred4runner,

There is a Technical Service Bulletin issued by Toyota for this very problem on the 2003 T4R.

I also encountered this problem a year or so back.

Once my T4R thawed out in the dealership garage, the ice/snow build up melted and the blower motor functioned normally.

As per the TSB, my local Toyota dealer installed a protective cover over the blower motor to prevent the ice/snow build up. No charge to me.

I have had no problems since.

They did recommend keeping the area where the front wipers sit at the base of the windshield clear of ice and snow.

Because it is a TSB, take it to a Toyota dealer - you should not have to pay for a new blower motor if they diagnosed the failure as ice/snow build up.

Cheers!

Hello Bossman!
Thank-you very much for the info.
I called the dealership and read the service advisor
the info, which he said he was unaware of, but he was
checking into. Again I appreciate the info!
Regards

TSB's are not recalls, so unfortunately, the work done according to a TSB is only free as long as the parts are covered under a warranty.

Hey Fred4runner,

Ok, so I went back to check my own service records/notes from when I had this looked after. The TSB # that I previously posted I had simply cut & pasted from some website thinking it would be the same.

My service notes indicate that I had a deflection kit installed as per TSB #AC00303 that was issued by Toyota on August 21, 2003. This TSB was specific for ice build-up on the HVAC blower motor.

I had this work done at North Bay Toyota in December of 2007 - no charge to me!

Hope this helps

Bossman.

Hey Fred4runner,

You might find this link much more helpful ...

The previous TSB # I gave you is apparently now obsolete.

The new TSB # is AC002-07 and was issued May 18, 2007.

Here is the link:

My air blower has died after a battery disconnect. I'm thinking it has something to do with computer but can't get it working.

I have checked all fuses. I can feel warm/cool air while driving passing through vents, but the fan doesn't work at any speed.

2003 Limited 80K

Any help much appreciated.

Thank you.
