Strange sound

Well I have no problems with my 4Runner to date since buying it back in mid-December. I even had my first run in with snow today heading to work. As I knew and expected, it held up perfectly with only one instance of traction loss and thats just cuz I got cocky and decided to stop late at a stop sign since nobody was around anyway.

Question though....Has anybody heard a sound inside the driver's side of the dash that almost sounds like a motor turning on, sitting on for a few seconds, and then shutting off? It almost sounds like a window regulator or like a power antenna going up. It doesn't happen a lot but I can hear it probably a handful of times on my 30 min commute to work.

Just curious if I'm alone...No problems seem to come from it but I'm just wondering if its something I should probably take to a shop to look at.

I have heard that same thing. The only time I hear it is when I'm on the brakes about to stop. I think it might be some sort of pump for the brakes, haven't had any problems though. Weird.

Maybe....
If you were slipping on ice/snow, the traction control kicking in will make noise like you mentioned. It does that here in Alaska.

That noise is the XREAS shocks the pump equalizes the pressure in the shocks when needed it is normal.

The 4th Gen T4R uses a brake booster pump, not a vacumn booster, for the brake assist. I think you are hearing this pump cycling. You can check this by remaining parked, ignition on but engine off. Pump the brakes on and off several times. You'll hear the pump cycle on and off. This is normal unless you think it's excessively loud.

I am not sure thats the noise. I think he is hearing the VSC kicking in. I have the X-reas and dont hear any pumping sound.

I have a 03 Limited and frequently hear this noise and also feel the slightest vibration through the brakes when it happens. Usually occurs as I slow down right before a complete stop.
I don't know if my truck has X-reas or not.

Not bothersome really, just noticeable
Purchased it Nov 08
