Bumper removal

Has anyone taken the bumper off of a 4th gen? I need to get my bumper repainted and the body shop wants to charge 2.5 hours labor or 150 bucks to remove and reinstall it. I wouldn't think it would be that hard but it would be great if someone had a write up.

I would think that a Haynes or a Chilton's book might be your best bet if no one has a walk through. These can all be found at Pep Boys or Autozone. Price is around $25. Good luck.

I checked on their websites and it seems that they don't publish one for our trucks? I could have just had a fail moment.

There are 6 or 8 bolts at the bottom of your bumper that attach it the rest of the vehicle. There are also 2? brackets that attach your bumper to your fender?.

I know for sure there are those bolts at the bottom which are 10mm. I only know this because I hit a pine tree recently and immediately took off my bumper as it looks 30x better.

Oh, and I had no trouble with the airbag sensor. I was told they are the two yellow things(1 left, 1 on the right) and you shouldn't set them off by unbolting the bumper.

haha, thanks guys. Well, it looks better than my FUBARed bumper, but it kind of sucks getting weird looks. But then again, I saw a 4runner without the driver's side rear window and the roof dented in due a tree falling on top of it. So I guess I made out better than that guy in this fluke weather.

GOH10, if you need detailed pics of what I'm talking about I don't mind running out and snapping a few more pictures. It's going to the body shop this friday so let me know by then.

When I was installing some trim behind the upper and lower grilles, I tried to take the bumper off. Removed 8-10 bolts from the bottom and along the fender trim...but I couldn't get it off b/c there was something else holding it in. I didn't feel like spending any more time so I just crawled up between the retainer and the radiator to get it work.

Good luck in your attempt. There isn't much more to it than those bolts. Also, there def. is not a chiltion's or haynes manual.

Here are some pictures of the bumper and of the front end. They are both banged up a good bit but you can get a good idea where possible connection points are by looking at the pictures of the bumper.

there are 2 10mm bolts up inside the fender liner. 2 plastic clips that hold the fender liner to the bumper on the side ( just turn them to remove them). there are 2 10mm bolt on the bottom of each side. these hold the fender liner to the bumper. you will have to remover the lower grille. this is the tricky part. there are 2 seperate clip that hold the grille o the bumper. just be carefull. them there are 3 push clips under the grille ( once it is removed). on the bottom center of the bumper there are a couple more bolts ( i believe 10mm). be sure to disconnect the fog lights as well. once all the bolts and clips are removed. pull out on the end of the bumper. they are still held in place by plastic brackets. these hold it tight to the fender. a good pull and its off. anything else just ask. i take them off all the time. for that price i would take it off myself too.

The clips? Do you pull straight down on the end of the bumper cover near the fender wells or out away from the vehicle?

Pull straight forward. It helps to have 2 people, one on each side. Give it a good hard yank. Those claws can fit pretty tight.
