The Sounds of Silence

I have been putting up with the annoying tapping sounds that comes from the windshield --- over bumps and at high speeds on the highway. The ones that sound like raindrops or small pebbles hitting the windshield.

I read that others have isolated this to the cowl under the wipers. One solution I read was to trim 1/8 inch off the edge of the rubber trim that contacts the windshield. The other was a heavy dose of slicone caulk like material.

Today I raided my kids project box and found an 8.5 x 11" sheet of black felt.

I cut it into strip about 1/2 inch wide and after loosening the cowl I put this layer of felt underneath the rubber trim edge that contacts the windshield. I left around 1/4 inch of the felt showing above the edge of the rubber trim along the length of the windshield.

I just got back from traveling the route that never fails to produce the tapping noise in excessive quantities.

Not a sound! I am one happy camper.

Just thought I'd share my solution - I know others have faced this and I didn't want to start cutting rubber trim or pouring goop everywhere.
