Question front end squeak 2003 4runner

Just got my 4 runner SR5 4x4 last weekend. Love the truck!

One thing started to bother me though ...

I noticed a squeaking/cracking noise coming from the front end when
applying breaks (coming to a stop in a parking lot for example). I
don't think it's the brakes - more like springs or bushings ... I tried
to rock the truck by standing on one side of the step boards holding the
roof rack and was able to reproduce the noise although this time it was
just squeaking sound.

Any ideas? Thanks for any help.

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

I think your problem has to do with the shock/spring (strut) assembly.

There are three possible causes:

1. Insufficient clamping force of the lower control arms to the subframe (sharp metallic pop when accelerating or decelerating)

2. Front shock spring coil contacting the end of the spring (clunk when driving over dips)

3. Bad front shock (thump over rough roads)

Either way, get Toyota to look at it. I think this problem is not uncommon in the new 4runner (more common in 4runners with XREAS??). I believe Toyota will replace the front struts for you or retorque the lower arm mounting bolts...depending on which problem you have.

Hope this helps...and good luck!

(BTW, i could be wrong on all of them...so take my word with a grain of salt.)

I had the same squeaking sound when I drove over speed bumps. I brought it in to my dealer a few weeks ago and they confirmed the same symptom.

They found that the bump stops needed lubing in the front. All is quiet up front now.

Thanks for the info!

That sounds a lot like what I have when rocking the rig.

I gotta make it to the dealer.

well I just got back from the dealer their official response was:

"FOUND LEFT/FRONT BODY SUPPORT BUSHING RUBBING AGAINST THE METAL BRACKING AND NOT CENTERED
REPOSITIONED METAL BUSHING TO RUBBER SUPPORT, RESECURED, AND TEST DROP THE VEHICLE"

So far - no more sound ...

While there I took care of the recall on FUEL PRESSURE PULSATION DAMPER thanks for letting me know about that one!
