Real world V8 towing capacity?
Regardless what the book and marketing dept says,
is 4-5000lbs pretty much the max for the V8 4WD?
I am considering buying an old Mustang out of state.
The car weighs 3400lbs + 2000lbs for the Uhaul trailer.

Can't help on OVER 5k, but It's good to 5k w/o WD equip. I pull a boat and the trailer has brakes, which is key IMO. Tail does NOT wag the dog at 65 mph. No major hills in my trips, but I don't think that would be a problem. Tow in 4, not D.
We will need pics of the pony!

After crunching the numbers its cheaper to hire a car transporter service.
I figure if trailer is $440 and the 10-12 mpg from towing would be around $7-800 out the door.
Plus the wear and tear of towing all that weight.

I tow my toyhauler, which when loaded weighs in at about 6500-7000 lbs, no problem.....and thats going up mountain roads and everything......I also drive in 4th but sometimes on real flat areas I'll throw it in 5th gear....
On a seperate note I've let my buddy tow it with his '04 Titan and we both felt like both vehicles towed them about the same of course he had more power which led to more acceleration but not by much, the only difference was he got better mpg...

I know you've apparently made up your mind, which is fine of course, but just another real world example: I have towed 7000 combined lbs with my 1st Gen 2000 Tundra with the 250hp 4.7L. Granted, it is/was rated @ 7200lb towing. Never have had an issue with it. I tow between 1000 and 7000lbs with it several times a year. It's an SR5 2WD model tho, and doesn't have to carry the extra weight of the 4WD equipment. And my heavy duty trailer also has trailer brakes - also a big plus.

Just curious... Did the Titan have a cap on the bed? Better aerodynamics has to factor in somehow... The front of the Titan punches a bigger hole so there's less trailer making the initial hole in the air, maybe that's it.

I just towed a 94 Z/28 convertible aprox. 100 miles on a u-haul car trailer with no problems what so ever. I also pull a 14' tandem axle 7k gvw utility trailer on a fairly regular basis and a 12' tandem axle 7k gvw enclosed trailer at least 150 miles each way, a few times a year. I almost always keep it in 4 and the trailers seem to tow fine, no issues with my 4Runner so far.
Yikes! $440. to rent a u-haul car trailer? I paid $49.00

Nope, no cap on the bed......are talking about the mpg or ? if so his 5.6 v8 doesn't have to work as hard as my 4.7 so he doesn't lose that much, he probably get's 12 mpg where I get 9-10 mpg....

"Thats not true, in the sense that you're talking about, it has to work EXACTLY as much as the iForce. What you're talking about is the fact that it is bigger, so it can perform MORE work at its max. The difference in mileage is not a factor of the engine having to work less, a bigger engine will never let you drive and use less fuel than a smaller engine. Diesels and some niche forced induction gasoline engines are the only things capable of doing something nuts like that.
The difference in mileage can only be accomplished by differences in the vehicle themselves (aerodynamics, gearing, engine tuning), or by bad math, or by using different top-off methods when refueling to calculate milage."
What I'm saying is that I usually get 19mpg on Highway and when I tow I get like 10 on highway, he usually gets like 15 on highway and gets about 12 when towing so there's a big loss between mpg of the vehicles he only loses 3 with the same load while I lose about 9, so the bigger engine tows the same load a little easier, I agree about the differences in aerodynamics, and etc....
