How to have fog lights on, but not low beams

Has anyone figured out how to have the fog lights on without having to have the low beams on?

Or have the fog lights on while the high beams are on?

It's just something where I'd like to have that flexibility.

Re: Fog Lights

I don't think it is possible unless someone were to rewire the system. The 4Runner is an incredible vehicle, but the fog light capabilities are kind of stupid.

It is possible with some modification - J.A. has a write up on how to do it here:

wow. I bookmarket it. Thanks. Have to do it one day. Was curious about that too. I have an awesome light set up and its extremely bright and wide at 55w lows and 35w fogs but I also would like to use all three with halogen Silvania Ultras as highs on empty highway cruising

I did JA's mod, but with a twist.

Instead of getting my signal voltage from the
relay (on with the key) I spliced into the parking
lights for power. Now I "can have" fogs on with
LOW's, HIGH's, DRL's or PARKING's. I like this even
better than "always on" unless switched from the stalk.

If that is your concern, you can perform the engine compartment fuse box mod from underneath and they will never notice it. Rather than bend out the fog relay prong, you cut the respective wire from underneath, tape off the side which is feeding from the low beams, and for the wire on the relay side you bring power to it via an idc tap on an ignition based 12V+ source.

OK. I see. I will have to read this a few more times to make sure I get it. I am trying to visualize these steps

AND Im guessing it would void the warranty...

It is totally reversable when done from above and can be quickly put back to factory specs. anyhow, it wouldnt instantly "void" the warranty unless it can be proven that the mod caused some particular damage. I have run this same mod on my 1999 for almost 10 years now (was basically the first to do this mod to the refreshed 3G 4R with factory fogs) with absolutly no issues.

I'm having a hell of a time trying to track down the 3m Scotchlok locally. I might have to go online, but I don't need a bag of 50.

Anyone know where I might be able to source one?

What's local for you? If you have marine stores nearby they often have that type of stuff as should a stereo install kit.

Keep in mind that the color of wires that you need to jumper (depending on how you want to do the mod) is different for different years. (The pin location is the same though)

Woot! Found an equivalent at radio shack! Not a 3m, but it should get the job done.

So I got I got the foglights to work. I spent probably a half hour chasing my problem which was the connecting wire I made had a bad connection. Doh! Than ks god I had a ohm meter which help me chase down the problem much faster. It beeps when there's a complete circuit.

As a tip, the wire connector that is used on the steering column is probably best clipped in some pliers. It's not easy by fingers. OE, the wires come electrical taped and wrapped, but it didn't look like it was necessary, so I didn't bother to re-wrap it. I just put the covers back on.

I also installed some Mod-Express 4300k HID's which went well except for right after I installed it, The driver's side wouldn't turn on. So that was maybe another 20-30 min checking all the connections when I compared to the passenger side and though hmmm.. maybe I plugged the power source to the ballast in the wrong way which happened to the be culprit.

let me tell you that these 4300k HID's are way brighter than the crap ass blue light bulbs that the previous owner had in there. Those had hardly any light output.

i'm llikely going to be changing to 6000k light bulbs since the rest of the trucks lights are 5000k or 6000k.

I'll see if I can get some pics up tomorrow.
