New 2006 Owner!

Hey all. I just picked up a silver 2006 SR5 4x4. It's got 27,000 miles, the v6, and a certified warranty (7yr/100,000 powertrain). I have a couple questions:

1. I have until Monday to purchase a 7yr/100,000 comprehensive/bumper-to-bumper warranty that is fully transferable and cancelable. The certified warranty is not. There is about 47 months remaining on this warranty. The cost would be only $1,295. I think this sounds like a good investment, what do you all think? What tends to break on these vehicles?

2. I see fog lights, but I don't see a button to turn them on. What's the deal? Am I an idiot?

3. I have a subwoofer to install. The stereo is the base stereo. Is there a subwoofer pre-out or should I just use the line level inputs coming from the rear two speakers?

4. What is the most convenient way to reach the battery from the trunk area? Is there a switch power line to tap back there as well?

THANKS!!

-Dan (Columbus, OH)

before i got my new HU & amp, i tapped into the rear door speaker, then used the cargo 12v outlet to run a self amplified bass box, which i still use.

The fog light switch on my 2005 is on the headlight switch stalk. Switch rotates similar to rear wiper switch on opposite stalk.

Yeah I thought about the 12V outlet except that it says the max power is 100 or 150 watts. My amp is more than that.

Get the warranty you never know not too much breaks on these my wife has 150,000 miles on her 03 and no problems and my 08 has been pretty good but little things could go wrong like I heard the radio has issues on some I have not had the problem but heard some do that would be covered and other things you will not have to worry about just my 2 cents. I say get the warranty but if you asked my wife she would tell you don't bother it is all up to you.
good luck
Bill

like someone has said already, the foglight switch is a twist style switch located on the headlight/turn signal stalk.

the foglamps will only turn on if you have the headlight switch turned at least one click. (running lights) you can mess around with the wiring to make it so you can have the foglights on whenever, but you'll have to search the forum for the post that includes the instructions

Does twisting the switch just turn on the main headlights? Does the stalk push out like for the brights?

The first stop is parking lights. The second stop is low beams. Push the stalk away from you for high beams, but the low beams have to be on for the high beams to turn on. Pull the stalk towards you to flash the high beams. Your parking lights and/or low beams can be on or off to flash the high beams.

The foglight switch is the inner ring (closer to the steering wheel). From the factory, they only turn on when the low beams are on and turn off when high beams are on (or if you're flashing).

Here's a write up from member J.A.'s personal site on making the foglight independent and keeping it from turn off when the high beams are on.

Ha, when I finally found it I felt so dumb! That is kind of a weird spot for it though considering it's now limited by the other lights being on. I'll have to search, but I'm guessing you can make it so the fogs stay on with the brights?

Thanks for the responses guys. Considering that these cars are extremely reliable and that I already have a powertrain warranty for 4 years I decided against extending the full warranty. Instead I thought creatively and put $1,500 in my Scottrade account to purchase some Toyota stock. I'll call it my Maintenance Portfolio.
