button on the left side of dash?
i'm looking at buying an 03 4x4 v8. I've noticed on the left side of the dash that there is a button that looks like the 4wheel drive symbol with an x in the middle of it. does anybody know what this button does? j/w

That button will lock your central deferential. Not for a use on the dry pavement, unless you are going straight. I would definitely recommend to test it, before you make a purchase.
For ta short test you can be on the dry pavement just do not turn your steering wheel.

To test it, I believe it also needs to be in 4wd. When you engage the center diff lock, it dis-engages the vehicle skid control (VSC). A light that says VSC OFF should come on.

It turns you traction control off I belive "someone chime in if im wrong" but when I enable it it will rev to the limiter when I'm trying to get out of somthing "like sand" Where otherwise your runner would click and vibrate for you and not get higher in the RPMs

ok, i'm confused now. When do i need to turn it on? Everytime i slip and slide on black ice, that button blinks and some bell rings, and i gain traction back.

If you have that button engaged, you will not get that traction back.
It turns off all of the traction controls and allows all 4 wheels to spin freely. Never engage it unless you are off-road. (You can do a quick test but don't turn the wheel)

He has a V8 model and that means it is 4x4 all the time.

No it doesn't matter. It works the same way in high or low range.

It locks the front and rear axles together. With it locked they will spin the same speed, giving you 50/50 power split front and rear. This helps when offroading.
You can't turn on pavement because in a turn the axles will want to spin different speeds and bind up.
The button also turns off the stability control which isn't useful offroad.

Ok, thanks for clarifying that for me, ....., I know that on my 02 V6, it has to be in 4wd.

the button locks the center diff not the front or rear. im not quite sure what you guys are saying when you say dont turn the wheel. i lock my center diff to do 4wd drifts in the mud and i have to turn my wheel almost all the way left or right and i have never had binding issues. Im not saying your wrong but i have put prob 10 miles on my car with the dif lock last week and and i had to turn my wheel. Are you talking about when your engaging it?
