Exclamation Weird Things! HELP!!!

OK help me with these two weird things.

1) The other day I was driving down the road and for some reason my 4runner would not shift into 4th/5th gear (not sure which one). The RPM's sitting between 3000 and 4000 and it would not change. This went on for about 20 minutes and then stopped. Hasn't done it since. What is it and should I be worried?

2) Almost every time I drive the area around the "2 - L" sticker in the shifter area gets really hot. All the way up to "D" and neutral and reverse gets hot. Eventually, spots (especially the "2 - L" sticker) become too hot to touch and will burn you. Sometimes it does not heat up at all. What is this and should I be worried?

Thank you!!!

I recently popped the compartment next to the shifter out, there's a lot of space under there, seems unlikely such localized heat is coming from the trans or engine. There are light bulbs under there, maybe those are getting too hot? Does it do this with the lights off?

I hadn't noticed this on mine but the light for those indicators is right below the 1-2. I just switched mine to LED when I did the others in the interior (same bulb as glove box) so if thats the problem, I can't check it now. It only lights when parking lights are on so check & see if this occurs during the day.

Had the battery been unhooked or died just before this happened? It takes a bit of driving for the transmission and engine to get their programs sorted out sometimes after losing power. Any work done on your truck before this at all?

Looks like a V8, what year and mileage? Any mods? If it has a transmission dipstick, how does that fluid look and smell?
