Have you checked the brake pads?

How long does it last and how often do you hear it? If it is only every couple times you hit the brakes and only lasts for a couple seconds, then it is the brake booster pump and is completely normal.

The squish sound is fine (mine makes that sound too).

Is it just making a noise or is it vibrating aswell? If it's vibrating then you may have a problem with your brake booster/master cylinder assembly. They all seem to do it a little bit, but in my case the vibration was such that it was distracting every time i braked. I've written about this in a couple other threads, but the long and short of it is that they had to replace the master cylinder (just replacing the brake booster didn't fix it).

If you are worried then take it a long to the dealer and ask to compare it to a couple other 4Runners.

Mine vibrates for a couple seconds every few times that I brake. It's done that since new. I've put 90k miles on it. No need to replace the brake booster or master cylinder.

It is generally not a good idea to apply grease to the brake pads. :jaw drop:

I guess I should have been a little more clear - they all seem to do it a little bit. But mine was rattling around to the point of dangerous distraction (I'm not used to brake pedals doing anything but braking a truck, so having something buzzing around every time I pressed it was pretty disconcerting). The dealer compared it to a couple other Runners, agreed that mine was rather more lively than the others, and replaced the master cylinder under warranty.

They tried the brake booster first and a couple other parts but it didn't stop the vibration. There is a night and day difference now.
