Hi folks,
Just picked up my 08 a few weeks ago and finally got the lift and tires on over the weekend.
I went with 16 x 8 ProComp 8069 and 265/75-16 Duratrac tires. This combo really pushed the wheels out PAST the fender flares a little. (4" backspacing and 0 offset). The wheels just bare scuffed the calipers so I ground a tiny bit off of them. Took all of 5 minutes a a side. Because of the changed offset, I had to push in the fender liner, remove mud flaps and trim a tiny bit of the bumper underneath. Again, not much effort at all. The stance is mean now. I will post front on pictures later on.
For the suspension I went with the Bilstein 5100/Toytec combo from Sonoran Steel. I bought a bunch of stuff from Steve with my 3rd gen and he has really well thought out and tested packages - even if I could have saved a few bucks buying the parts separately. He also claims the front shocks are custom valved for the FJ and 4Runner, so that should help as well. The kit included shocks, rear coils - which turned out to be ToyTec Superflex 2". You reuse front coils at max setting for 2.5" lift. Steve also includes all brand new OEM bushings and washers and a pair of sway bar collars. Like I said, a very complete package.
It was my first suspension swap and it took me roughly 8 hours total. I could probably do it in half the time the second time. Other than that, it was pretty straightforward and I am thrilled with the results. The truck has a nice stance and I still preserved some rake for when I tow or carry more weight. The ride is terrific and feels just as soft as stock with better damping.
