No Aux mode on 2005 but still want iPod hookup

I've been reading a few other posts and it seems like the conclusion to get an iPod hookup directly to the head unit on a pre-2006 4runner is use a tape adpater or replace the head unit.

I have the stock CD head unit and am looking for a simple-ish way to connect my iphone directly to the head unit... something like a cable going to the rear of the head unit. Is this not feasible with the 2005 and before?

I have a USA Spec adapter installed in my 2004 4Runner and my wifes Honda. They both work with the factory head unit CD changer controls. It is pretty easy to install, just plug and play once you get the dash apart. There are some helpful write ups around on taking apart the dash, just do a quick search.
Here is the guy I brought mine from on Ebay. There wasn't any communcation from him after I purchased it but it got to me in 2 days.

Brand New USA Spec PA15 Toy iPod Interface! - eBay (item 160458969137 end time Jul-28-10 10:24:41 PDT)

I have the JBL 6 disc but it works with single disc players too.

On a 2005 stock SR5 single cd player will this solution work as well? In the eBay listing is says "Works on GEN4 Radios for Toyota and LEXUS. These are factory Nav radios that do not have MP3 CD Playback capability." My only concern with a solution like that is how to access the iPod input if I don't have an AUX button... Do you access your ipod by hitting CD or something?

The unit has a cable/plug that connects to the rear of the head unit. The headunit sees the device as an aux cd changer. I had a pa12 and recently went with the pa15 when i got an Iphone. It works really well on my sport edition 2005 stock radio(single cd). Check out the usaspec web sight.

I don't have an AUX button on my head unit either. You just hit the "DISC" button to toggle between the CD player and the CD changer input. The USA spec unit fools the head unit into thinking your Ipod is a CD changer.

Got it... that makes sense. So with that being said, can you install the pa15 without getting all the way behind the HU?

I have the Soundgate TOYPD2 in my 4runner. It's got a module that I put in the glove box that runs from the back of my radio. It plays and charges my iPhone 3GS and shows the song title on the OEM radio if you put the songs into a playlist. Got it for about $70 on eBay about 4 months ago

Tried the tape cassette adapter driving around today... the more I use that the more convinced I am of getting the direct iPod integration... the scratching is driving me nuts!

No. It's too tight behind there. You need to pull the HU out to make connections. It's really easy to get at the HU if you follow some of the write ups available. The USA Spec PA15 works fine in my 2004 JBL HU.

Awesome! Thanks for the link... looks way straight forward. I've decided the pa15 is what I'm going to go with for right now until I get an in dash NAV system like the Kenwood Excelon 9960... I have that in my Lexus IS300 and I LOVE that thing. Bluetooth hook up and Gramin nav. Love it. Thanks for your guys' help... I'll let you know when its all in and ready to go!
