Pricing Help! Thoughts! 2006 SE 4WD
Hey guys,
I may end up having to sell my baby....yes it's true. Anyway, down to business. My truck blue books at 22k (excellent) and 21.5k (good). I'd say the "good" condition best suits my truck, it runs perfect and I have never had any issues, although there are a select few minor cosmetic errors. A minor dent on the rear right bumper and small chip on the right rear tail light. Im shooting high with the 23.5k, what are your thoughts on what I should accept? I know...some of the stuff I wrote is a tad glorified
Here is my CL posting rough draft...
I'm asking $23500 obo
2006-2007 Black Toyota 4runner Sport Edition 4x4
82xxx miles on the odometer (50k easy freeway miles)
I get about 23 MPG on the freeway and 20 MPG in the city, it’s surprisingly very economical!

The truck is ranked 1st out of all 2006 Toyota 4runners on CarDomain.com

Stock Options above standard
Sunroof
4 Wheel drive (2wd, 4H, 4L capabilities)
Sport suspension
Hood scoop
Spoiler
Dual power seat controls
Built-in MPG calculator and thermostat

All in all, I have put about $4,000-5,000 into this truck + $900 a couple months ago for the new tires. Therefore, asking a little over the blue book value is, in my opinion, fair.
Oil changes every 5k miles with documentation
Only cosmetic error is a minor dent on the back right bumper and chip on the lower tail light from an odd trailer. She's seen about 150 Tahoe trips, been though many 10 degree blizzards without a problem, pulled countless people out of the mud/sand, you name it she can do it. The balance between performance and practicality is wonderful.
Aside from the currency, the most important item put into this vehicle is time, the time working on your own vehicle along with the care and passion to create something you’re proud of. This car has been my pride and joy for the last 3 years of my life and I've taken great care for it
I am the second owner, clean title/carfax.

I think you would be lucky to get your asking price. I paid about $24K last year for an 06 SE 4WD V8 with 32K.
You have some mods that while cool to us on these boards, are going to bite you in the azz.
All the flat black painted pieces, debaging to name a few. You cut your market down by at least half in my opinion as many are looking for a nice clean stocker. I never cared about tires because inevitably they were not what I wanted anyway. Of course, that's all it is, an opinion. I hope you get every dime for it! My guess is going to put you at $19,500 - $20,000 on the high side.
Less miles, newer, not an SE though... http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...price=&drive=4 wheel drive&default_sort=newsortbyprice_DESC&seller_type=b&max_mileage=&style_flag=1&sort_type=priceDESC&address=89123&advanced=y&end_year=2009&doors=&transmission=&max_price=&cardist=7&standard=false

All the aftermarket stuff, especially the exhaust, will make it a lot more difficult to sell. I think your starting price is ok, but if you are not getting any interest you will have to start lowering the price.
Also while your ad may be good for a forum like this, I think it is waaay to wordy for Craigslist. I would downplay (i.e. not mention) the mods as much as possible. Tell them about the changes you made ONLY if they ask about something. Just my opinion, but I added comments to the ad below. Best of Luck with the sale!
I'm asking $23500 obo good
2006-2007 Black Toyota 4runner Sport Edition 4x4 is it a 06 or 07 ... can't be both. Add V6

Flat black powdercoated grill.

Agreed, all that stuff you did....I don't care about because that may not be what I want. That is like a Harley guy trying to sell his bike with a bunch of chrome skulls on it, yeah he may have paid a lot for all the work and it took him some time. However I don't want skulls on my bike so....see my point.
I just picked up a 08 Limited V8, loaded minus 3rd row and rear entertainment with 55K on it for $25

I agree, less is more. I'd give the information about the truck V6, 4x4, color, mileage, stereo upgrades, but the rest let them come find it out. Like I said, I like a lot of the mods you did and it may take someone seeing them to appriciate. My first response was really negative, sorry about that, it was one of those days. I like the ride, I just don't want you to miss market. And ask a higher price than what you want. Then you can settle close to the "real" price.
Good luck man, or hope you have no luck. Haha! (just cause then you get to keep your ride!!)

I'd post it on here, t120 and cardomain if possible.
IMHO, you customized to the point of not being very appealing to the majority of people that would be looking for a used 4runner. To me, that makes it worth less than blue book unless you find the right person that is wanting all the mods and is willing to pay for them. You can probably get some of your money back on your tires, dvd player and maybe the rack. Other than that I would be prepared to take a loss.
I hope I'm wrong and you get what you want out of it though, I've been known to be wrong a time or two in my life.

Here is what I have found and its probably not what you want to hear.
I just finished selling my 05 Infiniti G35 coupe in order to buy the 4runner I just bought. After a lot of research and price checking, here is what I found. Kelly Blue Book gives very inflated values. If you start looking around at cars for sale, both online and offline, you will find that almost no one gets KBB for a car and almost every ad will say how KBB appraises their car as higher than they are asking. Reality is most people will take less than their asking price for a car. So if it seems common for people selling a car to say how they are asking less than KBB says its worth, that alone indicates that the values KBB gives are inflated. The best and most accurate valuation for your car will be the "True Market Value" appraiser at edmunds.com. The value will be a lot lower but the reality is that is going to be the most accurate as to what you can actually get.
My Infiniti as a "good" rated car(which if anything it was on the top end of the good rating) was appraised as 18,000 as a private party sale price by KBB. Edmunds gave it at about 16,000 as a private party price. I had it marketed in the paper, with signs, on forums, autotrader, cars.com and craigslist and it took me almost 3 months to sell it, and I ended up getting $16,000. This is for a clean car, 1 owner, no mechanical issues or cosmetic issues, perfectly detailed for every showing, in the most popular color for the vehicle.
Edmunds was also spot on with its estimation of the "trade in" value. Every car dealer that had a car I was interested in offered almost the exact same trade in credit as Edmund's said they would.
Your mods will decrease your market and won't add too much value to the car so get on Edmunds and place your asking price at about a grand or so over the private party value but be prepared to take close to Edmund's value

Agreed, I usually go by NADA and Edmunds. KBB's values are a pipe dream!

i paid 23,900 for my 07 sport with 30k miles on it, new tires, with certified extended warranty to 100k miles. I would also think the mods will hurt you unless you find the right buyer. To the average consumer, they want as close to stock as possible. They will see the mods as a negative because they will think you beat the snot out of it off road

Ok, this is not hating on you at all. I bought my truck 2 years ago, V8 on top of that, with 21k miles for $21.5k. Not to say I didn't get a good deal, but that is shooting a little high. I was thinking about trying to put mine up (asking for) 25k. I have almost 78k miles and almost 9k worth of aftermarket stuff. Try parking it close to a wealthy highschool or neighborhood and maybe you can get a spoiled kid to talk his parents into buying it. GOOD LUCK! SAD your selling it though.

The starting price is fine, but I would be surprised if you got over $20k for it. My guess is that you won't get within $3-5k of your asking price, and that is being optimistic.
Unfortunately mods don't add a single dime to resale value unless you were lucky enough to find someone on a forum like this to buy it. As mentioned, modifications not only count for nothing, they actually decrease its value.
Good luck with the sale.
