D light on dash not lighting up (sometimes):

A few weeks back I was sitting in traffic waiting for a train and put my 08 4runner in park. When the train cleared I throw it into drive but I missed the D and went from P into 4. Once I realized I was in 4 I bumped it into D but I noticed the D light on the dashboard did not light up. At first I thought I was somehow in between 4 and D as there was no shift lights lit at all. I pushed the selector back into 4, 4 lit up, then I put it back into D but the D did no light up. About 2 second later the D light popped on.

Confused, I went back and forth between 4 and D a few times and twice when going from 4 to D the D light would take 1 or 2 seconds before it lit up. After that, it never did it again. Since it only happened a few times I figured it was just a long day at the office.

Today it happened again. I was at a light, foot on the brake, and put it into 4 from D then back to D and the D light on the dashboard took 2 second to light up. I tied to reproduce this but it only happened once today. After the first “delay” the dash lights worked fine when going through the gears. Very strange.

Has anyone else seen this? Is there some sort of sensor that tells the dashboard which gear you are in and could this be faulty?

My 2008 just started doing this within the last month or so. Totally sporadic. If I pop it into neutral and back to Drive it lights right up.

I've had this issue pop up recently as well. On my 05 V6 it doesn't affect the actual shifting into gear, its just the shifter isn't immediately lighting the gear on the dash. A gentle nudge on the shifter usually sets the light on the dash into the correct gear. I'd bet there's a sensor somewhere in the shifting assembly that's out of whack a little. I'm not really concerned about it unless it begins to hold up the actual shifting into gear. Just in case anyone's wondering I have 169,000 miles on my 4 runner.

My "D" light on my dash went out today, is this any easy fix? Is it just a bulb? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

No, it's not a bulb, it's a soldered LED
