Factory OEM spoiler vs. Port Istalled OEM spoiler (with photos)

I've noticed a little confusion lately and also in some threads I have searched on here about the difference between the factory OEM spoiler and the port-installed OEM spoiler. Both are Toyota parts, both are available from the dealer (although there are probably only 5-6 per color still available for the port-install spoilers). The factory spoiler is larger, a little more "chunky" and I've read that it is more "functional" than the port installed unit. As far as its functionality is concerned, I've heard everything from downforce, to keeping the rear window clean, and even keeping exhaust gas out of the cabin when driving with the rear window down. I can't confirm or deny any of that personally. I photographed two vehicles on our lot, one with the factory spoiler and another with the port-installed to give a photo reference for them.

*NOTE - both units include a third brake light. Body-mounted third brake light can be seen glowing from behind port installed unit but is hidden from view completely with the factory spoiler.

In the photos above, the factory OEM spoiler is Shadow Mica on a Limited model and the port installed spoiler is Black on a XSP Sport model.

Hope this helps!

It does look like the factory installed spoiler will move more air than the port installed spoiler. As for downforce on either one, I don't think so. What is the price difference? I'm still on the fence if I like them enough to buy one.

I ordered a color-matched port spoiler for my Limited to replace the factory one. It looks like someone scraped/scuffed it on a garage door or something. That and I personally don't like the bulky look of the factory one. I believe it was around $300 for the port spoiler, which again, comes painted. I believe the factory one is around the same painted.

I don't buy the downforce difference between the two, and I can smell exhaust gas coming in the vehicle with the rear window down with the factory spoiler, so I don't buy that either. Keeping the rear window clean? I'm not sure on that either, but I know how to use a wash mitt and a bucket of soap, so that's not a concern for me.

heres a tread on it. Factory Spoiler the exhaust smell will be there no matter which one is used, but having the exhaust exit to the side helps . http://www.toyota-4runner.org/perfor...e-4th-gen.html

the only true thing i can attest to the "hump" spoiler is it will avoid excessive dust build-up on your rear glass as i have mentioned in your other post.. i know this for a fact as i have compared this with my in-laws whose 4runner doesn't have the hump spoiler.. just looking at the picture will tell you that it will direct air to your rear.. as far as "downforce theory", here's a good read... Spoilers, what are they good for. - Car Forum Archives | Car Forums... Spoiler aerodymics rear spoiler design and construction

The port installed spoiler is same style spoiler from SpoilerDepot.com. The flat OEM spoiler has the 3rd brake light on the face just like the humped spoiler. The OEM flat spoiler from the factory were on 2003-04 4Runners. 2005-09 4Runners had the humped on.

I don't think the port installed spoiler is manufactured by Toyota. Similar to find leather on a SR5 or SE 4Runner.
