Did the dealer comment on the torque converter they replaced?
Was just going to mention that the dealer techs didn't have much to say on the old unit. I asked if there was something they could visibly see wrong and they said no. Again the major thing mentioned was that if someone took the time to open the tranny, you may as well replace the converter.

Smile Update

I'm updating this thread to report its now been almost 90 days since I've noticed this problem. My issue appears to be fixed!

I can only guess that I needed to give it more time for a higher concentration of the new fluid make its way to the torque converter.

This past weekend I tried repeatedly to duplicate the problem by traveling on a hilly road and carefully setting my speed so as to put the transmission into that area where it wants to downshift at light throttle.

All good now.

Hopefully this thread helps others with this issue, I'm at 76,000 miles currently and it seems 100,000 miles on this 'WS' fluid would be waaaay to long.

I am not sure if i am overreacting, but i noticed this today on the way from work. It was snowing and i engaged my 4WD HI and as was cruising the highway, i felt that something was rough. The gas pedal and the engine roar both were rough. I dont know if its due to the weather or the gas. I did fill the tank completely(20 gallons) before the ride.

I also had put in some Toyota EFI treatment in the previous gas refill. So i am curious if i am noticing the difference as i topped up the gas tank and i am back to normal as the EFI treatment was gone with the previous fill.

Lately i have noticed that the mileage and power has taken a beating. I suspect the ethanol content in the gas is screwing things up.

But interesting thread and i will keep watching my 4runner for the symptoms mentioned in this thread.

That does not sound like the same issue to me at all.

*
Drive onto the rumble divots on the side of the lane on a highway at speed...
*

That is EXACTLY what this issue both sounds like and feels like. 100%

The other give away for this issue is that it only happens in 'D' in the gearshift so if you drive around in '4' it wont happen.

A few drain and fills of the transmission in my garage was all it took to fix this issue for me.

This thread helps alot. I believe I might be have a bit milder version of this same problem. But I have a 2008 with only 35k miles and I understand it is a closed system.

Suggestions?

Much appreciated.

You have the same transmission that I do. The 'closed system' uses the 'lifetime WS fluid' which can be drained like I did.

When ours started acting up, I figured I would do a drain and refill and being the cheap-o that I am, went to Wal Mart and purchased Wal mart Type VI fluid, which is allegedly compatible with the WS fluid. I drained the pan, put 4 qts back in and leveled it off using the jumper wire, pull the plug technique. Since then, we have had none of the vibrations.

Did the Type VI fluid somehow change the properties (viscosity, temperature-viscosity relationship, compressibility, etc.) just enough to mask the problem? Was swapping out 20% of the fluid enough to remove some crud that was causing problems? Did the problem just go away on its own? Was our transmission low on fluid before and the addition just brought it up to the correct level?
In any case, I submit my experience as simply that. If it was not cost prohibitive, it would be cool to get a 4Runner and remove all the WS fluid and replace with Type IV (the heavier, previous generation that the trans was originally designed to use) and see what happens. Something tells me that it might just work...

Another idea that I had, when looking at the almost watery consistency of the used WS fluid was the old friction modifier trick. Perhaps the fluid still meets viscosity requirements, but its lubricity has been reduced. Again, I did not do this, just spit-balling here.
Any update on this ? I am about to to do a dex. VI 3qt change tomorrow and see if it helps

Sounds like you need to do your homework...your 05 does not take Type IV fluid.

First drain and refill today. So far no shudder. I bought ten quarts of WS and will be changing it slowly over the next few days. The old stuff was pretty brown but didn't smell burnt

Has anyone had a dealer replace their trans fluid? If so, any in New Jersey?

Trying to get an idea of who does good work and the cost.

Are they able to get all the fluid out and replace or do you needvto go back multiple times?

Can independent shops do this?

I'm not too mechanically inclined so I can't do this myself but I have this issue and it's making me crazy.

I must get this fixed once and for all.

Thanks.

Caldwell Toyota did my Cruiser for around $450 including labor and 15 quarts of WS fluid.

They know the procedure for a fluid exchange NOT a flush.

Thanks but I must be missing something.....

What is happening here that costs $450? Is this labor intensive? Is it the WS fluid?

If it's justified then fine.
