Do I go with the extended warranty?
Purchased 2005 SR5 V6 on 12/31/04. I can purchase the six year platinum warranty extension for $1100. What do you all think? I know these 4R's are built like tanks, but I did have a warranty extension on my last vechicle and it literally saved me thousands -- of course, it was a Chevy. What are your thoughts?

It all depends on how long you want to keep your 4Runner. If you are keeping it for a long period of time and for many miles, then it is a must. Even though it is a Toyota, you never know what could go wrong. There are so many computers in the 4Runner that you never know when one could go out on you and then you are talking big bucks!! In addition, the warranty gives you free towing to any Toyota dealer and provides you with a rental car for the time your vehicle is in for repairs. If you are keeping the truck for only 2 or 3 years and do an average amount of miles (12,000-15,000), then it is probably not worth it. Another thing to note is that the warranty is transferable. If you want to sell this truck and buy another Toyota, you could transfer the remaining warranty to your new Toyota. If you want to sell your Toyota before the warranty is up, then you will be refunded for the part of the warranty that you did not use.

generally i say no to the extended warrenties beacuse i think they're a waste of money. but as with all things at a car dealership, the price is negotiable. if you can talk them down a couple hundered dollars, then i'd say go for it.

Yup, I went with the 7year/100K plan. I'm planning on keeping the truck for more than that so I feel its a bit of "insuarance" in case anything may happen.
Mark86, I wasn't told that it was transferrable to another Toyota vehicle but that the new buyer of my Toyota could have it in their name. They would in effect take my vehicle with the extended warranty. (Might be a deal maker/breaker)

My parents got the 6 year 100,000 mile warranty with their truck and the dealer said that it is transferrable to another Toyota vehicle or you could get money back for the warranty remaining if you sell the truck before it is up. Of course, it could either be only in the Northeast region or a lie the dealer told us to sell the warranty.

usually you can find extended warranty much cheaper on your own through a third party, but $1100 doesn't sound bad at all.

Are you sure the dealership didn't say transferable to another owner?

100% sure. The salesman said that the remaining part of the warranty is transferable to another Toyota.

If you feel as if you are being pressured into purchasing this extended warranty; you could always wait. As mentioned earlier by another poster, you can acquire third party extended warranties. You can do this anytime up to the manufactures standard 36mo./36k warranty. You can then get a gauge as to how much driving you are actually doing. I say this to point out that you may want to go longer years if you drive less miles or more miles/less years if you are a high mileage driver. I will look into purchasing an extended warranty after my two year mark......when I am sure that I will be keeping this vehicle for at least 7 years or more. By doing this...I can gauge my mileage and negiotate a price fitting to my usage without wasting too much of the warranty. Since I have less than 5k miles in 9 mos........something like a 7 yr/60,000 miles would fit me. But who knows how my driving habits may change over the next 12 mos or so.......! Just my two cents to you.

I wanted to do that, but the guy at the Toyota dealership said it will cost me a good bit more now that I have 21,000 miles on my 4Runner.
Of course I am talking about a Toyota warranty and not 3rd party. Where is a good place to look into a 3rd party warranty?

I looked into one about 3 mos after I purchased my runner. Go and do a Google search for extended car warranties to take a look at what's out there. These folks are like car salesman......I had 2-3 call me back within 24 hours. Good luck!!

the guys over at siennaclub forum are saying they got the genuine toyota extended warranty for their sienna for $776 + tax... (platinum, 84 mo, 100k miles, 0 deductible). I dunno what he'd do for the 4runner, but give the guy they list in there (Scott Moss) a call to see what he'd do for the 4runner. here's the link: http://www.siennaclub.org/forum/inde...showtopic=5914

When I got the pressure to buy
an extended warranty at Toyota, I told the salesman, "Are you saying that this Toyota is such a POS that I need an extended warranty? man, I better cancel this deal and check out the Hondas down the street." That stop the salesman in his tracks and left him flapping his gums with no sounds coming out.
Actually I have never purchased an extended warranty and here's why. Like all insurance policies, it is a gamble, a calculated risk. You are not really buying a 100,000 warranty. You are buying a 64,000-40,000 mile warranty. Toyota has a 3/36,000 bumper to bumper, and a 60/60,000 for engine and drivetrain, so you are paying lots of money for the balance of the 100,000 miles.
If something goes wrong, it normally goes wrong within 15,000-25,000 miles. If the car was made right, and it does not conk out within that time, it would normally run pretty well for the next 85,000-100,000 before it just plain old wears out. Wear and tear is not covered by waranties. Only DEFECTS. SO when a part just pains wears out, you're SOL.
If you do need work for something between the factory warranty and the extended warranty period, will it cost as much as you paid for the warranty? The cost has to greatly exceed the price of the warranty to make it worthwhile as you probably slapped the cost of the warranty onto the price of the car and financed it so you're paying price of warranty plus interest....so what could go wrong that would cost $1,100-$1,900+ to repair in that time frame? Dodge, Ford, Chevy, I would say yes, that is a higher risk. Toyota, I think, is minimal risk.
So far, having owned 2 new VWs, one used Volvo, new Ford Mustang--that went into the shop about a dozen times under warranty, but still ran OK until 125,000 miles, Chevy Tahoe--that went into the shop about 1/2 dozen times under warranty, but no problems till 140,000 miles and still runs at 270,000 miles, and this 4Runner, I have yet to lose on my gamble.

I bought the extended warranty, prolly just cause I got the truck for 700 below invoice. One thing that made the sell is that, under the normal warranty, i.e. your brake rotors warp and trash your pads. The rotors are covered under warranty, the pads are not! With the extended deal, from day one anything that is affected by a malfunction even wear and tear items are covered. NOW whether they will actually honor what was in the agreement or not , I hope I never have to find out!
