Unusual Tire Wear (Pic)

Just noticed this morning some unusual wear on one edge of my BFG's. They are rotated about every 5k of which 90% are highway miles. Its on the front passenger side.

One side of the lugs is worn and the other is not. The driver side is fine. The first pic below is the bad one. The rear tires are fine although it is evident that something similar happened to the rear passenger side tire.

Should I look to get an alignment or is this a suspension issue? Ill have to look to see if I have leaking shocks. I want to nip this in the butt before it gets worse. It doesnt look it but those BFG's have over 20k on them.

Sorry for the ****ty pics but the first one with the yellow underlines are where the lugs are wearing and the arrow shows the direction of rotation. It is only on the outer lugs. Ill get better pics tonight, I was in a rush for a final.

i had the same thing happen on my old bfgs on my old 4runner. tire tech somewhere said it was due to "aggressive driving and cornering". i couldn't argue because, well, it was agressively driven.

Think about the shifting weight. The tire will wear more on the outside edge from agressive driving. There could be a posative camber issue, have you checked the alignment lately? If you really want it gone, have them align it more negative than the factory spec or at the negative extreme of the factory spec. Most places try to get it right in the center of factory specs.

no, i had a pretty hard s turn by the house to i got both tires about the same, but it was always the back side. the front edge of the tread was always nice and sharp. really confused the sh!t out of me for a while.

My only disagreement is this:

Yes I understand weight shift and physics - I'm an engineer. Wouldnt the wear be on the outer most edge of the tire then? Why is is on an inside edge of the outer lug and why only on one side? Ill have to look on the inside of the DS tire.

My alignment appears fine, I know just because it tracks like an arrow it can be off.

Ill get a better look this afternoon.

i'm an engineer as well, so it didn't make sense to me either...until my dueler ats did the same thing. alignment was done after both installs. i guess the way the weight shifts forward and over it causes that back edge to drag as the treads flex.

Glad I'm not the only one then. I'll have then swap sides and position next time I get an alignment. I tend to drive fast but try to minimize corner speed to prevent wear. Oh well.

What kind of engineer are you? I'm studying to be a mech e. I'm a senior. Going to pursue an MBA at sone point.

Mechanical. I graduated 3 years ago. I am still considering the MBA route, espeically considering the fact that my company will give full reimbursement for tuition. I really thought about an MBA just so that I could see girls in my classes for a change...

oh, and congratulations. it's a pain in the a$$ degree to get and you're past all of the hard stuff. they called it pre-business at my school (University of Cincinnati) because nearly all of the guys who quit went straight into a business program.

In my case I knew it wasn't and alignement issue or tire rotation issue. When I found out my XREAS was bad and therefore causing a different ride on the tires I guessed it was because my shocks were bad. My tires were chopped on the inside though and on both front tires not just one. Maybe check your shocks?

Thanks man. I'm actually not graduating until next January. I transferred from business to engineering in the middle of my sophomore year.

Regarding the MBA. I just dont want to be "that guy" that works ridiculous hours and gets paid mediocre at best. I'm much more suited to be manager than number cruncher even though I come off as an ******* on here sometimes.

On topic: I'll look at shocks tonight.

Off topic too. Mechanical engineer here. When I was in school there were actually lots of girls in my Civil Engineering classes before I switched majors. Nice to see other engineers on the org too.
