Replace '04 1GRFE with Dual VVT 1GRFE

My 2004 1GRFE engine is a goner and am either trying to find the best place to buy a remanufactured one or the cost of putting in the new 1GRFE with Dual VVT since I am going to have if forever hopefully. What has to be updated for the Dual VVT engine to work in a 2004? Any suggestions if I have to use the single VVT engine on the best place and price for one. I am stationed in Germany so it has to be shipped to.

Just curious???? Did you buy your 04 in Germany from another T4R.org member?? Vandert.

I know there was a member that changed his own engine and went from say a 04 to a 05 and he had to change a number of things. I can not find the thread at the moment. It would be big job, I would think, to upgrade to the New 4.0L. ECM, Wiring harness, Sensors, marrying everything to work with the current Gauges ect.. It would be alot of work. I think you would be better off trying to find a good used single vvti and slap a super charger on it from the tacoma or FJ. You would have more power than the new Dual vvti and be able to keep up on the autobahn!!!! search super charged 4Runner on Youtube.

Good luck!!

I am inclined to agree with NCSCOTT.

Here's one. On a quick skim it looks like the solution for him was changing the cam position sensor back to the '04 spec... Read it better than i did though, I just "quick skimmed" it.

If you're looking to put that into the 04, you'll have to have some wiring changes... and the ecu from the 05 with the harness from the 05. You'll have to have the harness converted. I've always goen through Doug off an MR2 board to get conversion harnesses, but haven't had any problems with them! For about $350 he'll convert the harness to your car. Recently we had one made for a 2Gr-fe (very similar to the 1gr dual VVTi) into a 91 MR2 turbo and it was great.

I'm really surprised no one else asked this, but why did your engine blow and how many miles are on it?

I think it was from -25 degree weather with no block heater. Has never overheated, always had all the fluids. Moved from Montana to Germany in May and in about September it had a misfire on cylinder 6 on startup for about 20 seconds then stopped misfiring. About a month later the oil started mixing with the coolant. Has 103,000 miles. I think I am going to get the original 1GRFE engine from Promar cause the dual seems like alot of work. The supercharger sounds like a good idea though.
