I've been toying with the idea of going up a setting on my 5100s, from 'stock' to the .85" setting. I have front FJ springs already (gained about an inch of lift) but I wanted to see if other members w/ FJ springs set to the .85" setting needed aftermarket UCA or a diff drop...? Also, any current ground-to-fender or hub-to-fender measurements would be great.

I did the FJ springs set at .85 with no diff drop or UCA and everything is good. The CV angles are pretty much level now. Not sure on measurements though. Tires are 265/70/17s as well.

Cool thanks for the reply. Is your 4Runner a V6 or V8?

Looks just about where I'd like to be.

Mines a V8. I was actually expecting a bit more height on the front but I think the extra weight of the V8 is bringing it down a bit.

Gotcha - Yea, I'm thinking since mine is a V6, I might have to add rear FJ springs for a little extra bump if I jump to the .85" setting. Right now my rear springs are stock, I just swapped out the shocks.

Bilstein 5100 with stock coils

I have a 4th gen and installed Bilstein 5100’s with stock coils. Is this taboo? Should I get some FJ coils or am I good to go?

You can run any coils you like if the look and ride is to your satisfaction. For example, I have 2015 Tacoma TRD Offroad coils on the front and FJ coils on the rear. See the suspension post linked in my sig to see a side-by-side pic of the FJ rear springs vs. stock and you'll see why many people swap them out.

Personally, I think many people overlook the need to change out the stock springs period regardless of what they're replaced with. They're made of stout metal, but the youngest 4th gen is 11 years old now and likely has 100+K miles. So no matter how stout, I think it's safe to assume that metal which has hauled around a 4500 lb. SUV for that long and that far probably isn't performing as well as it once did. People always go on about shocks, and they're important, but springs are just as important if not more so.

Curious as to why FJ springs are being used in the front of 4th gen Runners especially with V-8's and 5100's. The 5100's will allow you to raise ride height, and the FJ are all V-6's so wouldn't those springs have less load rating than the factory 4Runner V-8 Springs?

Are the rear FJ springs load rated higher or just generally longer than stock 4runner springs? Thanks

From my understanding the FJ springs have a higher spring rating. I did the 5100/FJ swap (leaving the perch on the bottom setting) and netted exactly 1" of lift with my v6. I plan on moving the perch up one spot to the .85" setting in the near future however.

I treated myself to the final parts to complete my FJ/5100 lift. Brand new OEM rear springs and a ToyTec 1/4 topout spacer and a rear OME 10mm trim packer to correct the driver side lean.

Going to replace my tired 2006 4Runner (V8, 4x4) suspension with FJ coils and shocks.

For those who just did FJ coils/shocks (no spacers, no 5100s or non-OEM shocks) did you find a big difference in ride between the Tokico or Trail Teams or TRD shocks themselves?

I highly doubt anyone has run more than one of those options but it's worth an ask if any of you have insights on the differences in ride quality or other differences.

Just not sure which shocks I want to order. I have other vehicles for heavier off roading (99 4Runner and 93 Pickup). Our 4th Gen 4Runner and 1st Gen Tundra are just for lots and lots of highway miles and daily driving / car camping.

Any pros and cons between the different FJ shock options? Thank you!
