How not to change your Alternator

2007 4.0 liter

alternator died after I made it to the office. OK, no problem, I'll swap it out right here.

10-15 minutes to remove ground, plug, top bolt, bracket bolt.

Then comes the bottom bolt.

Here is what not to do
Try to reach it with a breaker bar and extender
you will round the nut and say all kinds of bad words.

remove the fan/shroud and get to it with an impact and a 14mm socket.

otherwise you will spend several hours grinding off the bold head, trying to drill it out, crying, pleading, and finally you have an epiphany!

you remove the plastic back housing, remove the four 8mm bolts holding the front and back together, hit it with a hammer/screwdriver until it comes apart. Then you hit it one more time for being a jerk before you separate the two haves and remove it from the bay.

FWIW, the new alternator, new belt, etc took less than 30 minutes to install including refilling the radiator.
