Oil consumption issue... is it normal?

I've been MIA from this forum for so long... it's changed ALOT. Glad to see some familiar names still around. Otherwise I'm glad to be back.

Now for my question. My truck has occasionally burned through 1 to 1.5 qts of oil within a few 5000 miles interval between oil changes. This happened 3 times, between oil change intervals during the entire time I've owned it. What could be causing this oil consumption and should I be worried? There's no smoke at all out the tailpipe and the engine runs fine.

well if it aint smokin then it aint burning it, i wouldnt think, i would guess its leaking somewhere, but 1.5qts should be pretty noticeable if leaking, let us know what u find, what motor?

it could still burn without you seeing it when driving. I'd watch the level and maybe use a little thicker oil next time.

No leak whatsoever. I think I'll up the oil to 10w40 or 10w30. Thanks guys.

I've been using mobile 1 synthetic 5w40 btw.

The '94 always used a half to a litre of oil at a similar interval as you mention since I've had it (50,000 km or 30,000 miles on it) and I've used all sorts of brands and grades with no change. It's got factory 4.88s so 120 km/h or 75 mph equals 3000 rpm. It's never, ever puffed a puff of blue oil smoke.

So when the consumption happened, what were you doing? Towing, high-speed running or anthying else? In my 4Runner's owner's manual there's an acceptable amount of consumption specified. I wouldn't worry about it. Actually, I'd stop using 5w40 and start using whatever it says in the manual (probably just 5w30).

oil consumption when AC is on

Hi all,
I seemed to be getting oil consumption when i have the AC on. I lose about a quart every 500 miles but it only happens when the AC is on.
I've taken it into the dealer and my local mechanic and no one can find any leaks or anything. does anyone have any ideas on what it could be?
Thanks!
