Display Light and Rear Brake Light

2003 T4R V8 4WD

I've got two separate lighting issues that I'm hoping are quick & easy...

1) The lighting for my console display right above the climate controls (time, temp, mileage, etc). has gone out. Specifically, only the right side has gone dark. How is this accessed and repaired? Anyone know of a thread that may have covered this?

2) The third brake light (located on the spoiler) has gone out. Will I have to remove the whole spoiler to access that bulb? There also seems to be a roughly 3-4mm crack (hole) in the housing. Maybe water damage?

Thanks for the help.

I believe you can just pop the center light out with a protected flat head screwdriver.

you believe?!?!? why give advice your not sure on, and be a jerk about it?

from my research, if you do not have a rear spoiler, you can access it by poping it out with a flat head, and unscrewing it to remove.

but since you have a spoiler,my understanding is that you have to remove the spoiler inorder to access the 3rd brake light. theres a thread on here about it somewhere. ill see what i can find.

Thanks Trevloc! Looks like I can get it done without removing the spoiler as described in the thread you linked.

Just ordered the bulb as well as some other small items from the dealer.

Display Light Fixed

The lighting for my console display right above the climate controls (time, temp, gas mileage, etc.) is now fixed. Even though it was only the right side that went "dark," I decided to replace all 3 bulbs. Super easy fix that took me all of 7 minutes (only because I had to hold the unit upside down and carefully "play" with the bulbs to get them to drop out).

For those who are interested:

Part# 90010-09017 $3.54 Consists of (2) clear bulbs that are installed behind the mid section and right section of the display panel.

Part# 90010-09018 $3.54 Consists of (1) green bulb that is installed behind the left section of the display panel.

Step 1) Remove pop-out cubby storage unit by simply opening it and then pull at an angle towards your body. Pops right out.

Step 2) Remove Phillips screw now exposed directly under temperature controls.

Step 3) Using two hands, grab a hold of the underside of the temp control unit and pull the bottom section free.

Step 4) Using two hands and many fingers, hold the display portion of the unit and pull straight out.

(I have read that sometimes it will sound like you're breaking clips but it's just them releasing. Mine came out with ease - no "cracking" noises)

Step 5) Release wiring harness clip.

Step 6) Once you have the whole unit released (info panel and temp. controls are all one unit), flip it over to find the (3) bulbs.

With a small flathead screwdriver, you will need to turn the back of the bulbs counter clockwise to release. Flip the unit upside down to wiggle or shake loose the bulbs and they should eventually fall out. Do one at a time.

Step 7) Install new bulbs and put everything back together.

Thanks for the detailed post with part numbers! The right side of my display has been out for a few weeks now, just haven't had a chance to pull it apart yet. Had found the threads you mentioned and was going to give it a shot. Appreciate the extra details. Will be replacing the bulb this weekend...

For my other problem, the 3rd brake light is out in the factory rear spoiler. I had already removed the light assembly without knowing whether it was an LED unit or bulb. Come to find out, it is an LED and the whole unit needs to be replaced. I verified this with the dealer utilizing my VIN. The dealer wants $180 but you can find it at shoptrd.com for $140. Part#81570-35100. I'm gonna skip this fix for the time being as I have other stuff I need to take care of first.

LOL, that was a great response.

Some 4Runner come with a factory spoiler and some have an aftermarket one that was added on after the fact. So if you're not sure which one you have, you might want to determine this. I think you might have an aftermarket unit since you said you removed the lens and its LEDs. I thought the factory spoiler uses regular bulbs, if I'm not mistaken.

Doc, you're probably right.

After removing the light unit from the spoiler, I noticed there is no possible way to open the lens to reveal a bulb. I stopped right there and called the dealer with my VIN to verify and they confirmed it was in fact LED. Guess that means my spolier was added on after delivery of vehicle to the dealer?
