Purpose of greasing

Hey Guys,

I am on my third 4Runner, currently a 2005 Sport Edition, and I have never greased or had anything greased on it. Obviously as you can tell, I am not a "mechanically" savvy individual. What is the purpose of greasing and does it help prolong the life of the car?

Thanks!

Wish I would have done that on a few cars. Any more info on what silicon spray you use? How liberally to apply? Or is it pretty simple? Just the outside? Or the inside too?

I don't remember what the brand is. I know its just what ever they have at the local autoparts store. I just spray it on then wipe off the excess from around the door frame. Its good for all rubber weather stripping. They use on refrigerator door gaskets also.
