Tips For My Road Trip From SLC, UT to Lackland AFB TX (San Antonio)

Making the trip to San Antonio to watch my nephew graduate Air Force Basic Training in a couple of weeks and wanted to see what kind of tips folk have for taking a road trip in the T4R. Thanks!

Just make sure you have enough money for gas . Regular maintenance generally assures no worries. Roads are good, weather should be uneventful. Just made a 700 mile fast round trip to Southern Oregon two weekends ago.

We flew in for our son's ceremony in 2004. Is was a moving experience for us and the graduate too. It will be fun for you guys. Unfortunately, for a T4R driver, I can only comment on convenient local restaurants for Mexican food. Taqueria Arandis, on W. Military Drive and Westoak St. looks like a dive from the outside and the same inside but you will not get a better taste of Tex-Mex, especially breakfast. Friendly atmosphere too. It is about 5 blocks northish from the main gate on West Military Drive. Closer to the main gate is a Taco Cabana which is OK but not as real. Another tip, your graduate will be ravenous for lots of non-military food and should get let off base once for the first time since he got there so be ready to do food.

GPS is good but do a google maps and print out the directions/maps. You never know when gps ie-electronis may go BYE BYE.
Water, redbull, some of ur own food(fast food can get dull after w while).
Never go below 1/4 of a tank before u get gas.

Been there, done that

willcountyjoel,

I know the feeling! I graduated in 2000 and couldn't wait just to eat a steak nice and slow without getting yelled at or drinking 18 glasses of Gatorade. He wants Chinese. It'll be weird seeing the base and all those trainees again after all these years!

I was in the Navy in Great Mistakes I mean Great Lakes. My first meal after graduation when you can leave the base with ur family was at Red Lobster, I think I ate or shoveled it in 2 minutes!

Hello to you fellow vets! Great to meet you guys AND fellow 4Runner owners!

pdubs, I was in the 323rd. Graduated March 27. I think my nephew is in the 324th. It'll be weird to walk around that place again.
