Off roading with 2wd
Any upgrades that'll help with my need for going offroading to cure the itch when it comes around. Bought the 03 SR5 2wd because i liked the body style and was in my price range. Wasnt really worried about not havin 4wd until i realized it was no fun.

Had this problem in highschool, when i owned a 2wd. If you have some disposable income I would recommend a rear locker. At least you could lock up the 2 wheels that receive power, and that would improve traction. The other method, which I used frequently back then, was just a kamikaze run through the mud with as much momentum (speed) as possible. Also, invest in a winch. You'll need it. You'll get to know your truck's limits real soon, and half the obstacles you'll encounter (rocks), you should be thinking of easier alternate routes. And hey, you only have to buy 2 mud tires instead of 4 right?

Get tires first, locker next (not cheap). That's about the best you'll do with a 2wd. I'd recommend the tires I have in my sig if not a true mud tire.

The first couple of things I would invest in is a lift, either all terrain or mud tires and also a locker.
I have a 2008 SR5 2WD and I have a lift and also the Nitto Terra Grapplers and it does pretty good but not as well as a 4WD. Make sure you go with somebody that has a 4WD and you have a winch or recovery gear in case you get stuck. I regret my decision going with the 2WD and my next 4Runner will be a 4WD for sure.

I would do a locker first. Tires are good to have, but not if only one of them is spinning.
Carry lots of recovery gear, your going to need it.

If you really want to off road then sell your truck and getg a 4wd version since even with the upgrades a 2wd will find it's limits pretty quickly.

It depends what kind of off roading are we talking about? mudding, trails, rock crawling, etc? Thats the question that needs to be asked.

What He Said ..Locker Installed will be about 1600.00 But Worth it Even for 2wd . Sometimes you just need that lil extra and with 2wd its a good way to go ..But understand its still 2wd and can only push so much.

i saw on power block tv a few weeks ago where they welded a piece of the gearing in the rear end to give it a full time 2 wheels powered at all times.
I wonder if we could do the same with the rear diff on ours. not even sure what it's called and cant find the dang link to it either.

i went through this. better to sell and get 4wd then do what i did and dump 5k in it and at the end of the day you have some a$$ hole who is like "thats gay still 2wd" and after all that work and money spent it will hurt your feelings and piss you off. save the stress and waste of money unlike i did.
