Dumb question: Has it made a noticeable difference in road noise with the radio OFF?? Also, how did you get your HVAC display to read out (reverse LCD) like that? That's really cool looking!

that's awesome! something i'm considering for mine too. i've rode in a V8 T4R and noticed it was quieter than my 6. just by a little, but noticeable enough. i can't imagine how quiet yours is now. How about a test drive?

100lbs isn't bad either. great mod. great post. go hokies!

I have definitely noticed a considerable change in road noise. Even passengers have commented at how much quieter the 4Runner is and have said it feels more 'solid' (maybe lack of rattles and road noise are what they're perceiving?). All decibel tests were done with the radio OFF as well. Obviously, there's no getting past wind noise from side view mirrors and rain slapping against the windshield, but all in all a major improvement.

My vehicle prior to this was an M45 and obviously it's not nearly as quiet as that, but I'm impressed and it exceeded my expectations.

The HVAC display was done by removing the standard LCD film and replacing it with 'reverse polarization LCD film'. I did the odometer as well and it really makes everything look clean, IMO. Here's the write-up and process pics I posted when I did the mod.

Certainly, if you're in the area and want to check it out for a comparison, just gotta let me know!

WOW...subscripted...very nice write up. I completely sound-deadened my 06 Subaru STI (now there's a car that really needed it), and can't imagine doing the equivalent to my 4runner (I guess call it lazy). Couple of questions:

1) what year is your 4Runner?
2) what would you consider the 'biggest bang for buck' sound deadening area? Is it the floor and doors?
3) did you plastidip your interior door handle inserts? If so, how do those come off?

thanks!

1. 2005 Sport Edition

2. Biggest bang for your buck and back is easily the doors and cargo area. Then the floor and finally the roof. I was pleasantly surprised by the factory sound deadening on the floors. Doors and cargo area will net you the biggest improvement in noise reduction.

3. The interior door panels are stock. I'm guessing you are referring to the top part of the interior door handle where you pull to close the door. I see in your signature you have a Limited. I'm fairly certain that the Limited models are finished with a silver accent on the door pull whereas Sport and SR5 models are black. Unfortunately, I don't have any images of the back of the door panel but I would guess that they either a) pop off or b) are held on with plastic rivets that one could drill out, paint the 'pull', and then glue back in place.

I can vouch for this significant noise reduction by doing just the cargo area and all the doors-inside and out (meaning the shell of the door), including the 5th door.

After seeing this write up, I duplicated it but only used the Xtreme DynaMat, all doors and cargo area now have that solid "clunk" sound when closing them. It definitely gives my T4R a better solid-well built feel.

My goal was to have ZERO rattling when bassin' that could be heard from outside the car. And doing this achieved this. I also placed some DynaMat on the backside of my license place. Bottom line is sound deadening to me is worth it. I plan to do this to every vehicle I own, because not only does it kill exterior noise and vibration, it improves speaker output, clarity and SPL.

The audio that my speakers product in the doors is a 110% improvement, although I did change the stock JBL system it came with, you just know by looking and installing the DynaMat that your speakers have a more stable environment to play in.

With the radio off, its nice and quiet. When I roll down the window its crazy how loud it is out there, then I roll it up....silence.

As for those that comment on increasing weight, this may be true but I think I lost enough weight while doing this project in the sun to balance it out.

I have always said if its worth doing (which it is) it's worth overdoing!

Nice work Hokie, how does that Alpine sub sound? I think I want to put in a low profile sub to fit the stock box.

I would like to check it out...I am in Springfield, VA. But will be outta town this weekend.

Also wanna pick your brain a little more out the dropping the headliner. Thinking of mounting two small amps up there (with crazy super over done bracing in case of an accident)

The sub is actually an Elemental Design 9kv.2 DVR 2ohm sub. Run off the Alpine PDX-5 it sounds great, IMO. The bass isn't going to rattle out your fillings but it's a huge improvement over stock and fills in the low end very nicely. I copied the idea for the stock enclosure and ED sub off of TeCKis300 in this post: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/audio-...-progress.html

Just got back in town, myself. Shoot me a PM and I'm sure we can set something up, definitely an intriguing idea! I'm located a stones throw away from Dulles Airport in Herndon.

Cool...I live near the mixing bowl in Springfield, but I work in the Tysons Corner area. I'll shoot you PM later this week.

Hokierunner,

Sorry about not getting back to you last week...one of my best friends father suffered a heart Attack last week. But I am glad to say (Thanks to God) that over the weekend his condition stabilized.

I'll shoot you a PM with my cell and try for later this week. Although it's gonna be tough , Family is visiting over the weekend, and I gotta take my 4year old to swim classes this week after work (and for the next 4 weeks).

Later

Just wanted to give a shout out and a big THANKS to HokieRunner, I stopped by this afternoon to check out the Runner and pick his brains a little for my upcoming project. Awesome guy and the truck install/upgrade is as clean as you see it in the pics.

...now get your Stang fixed! talk to you soon.

Took the truck apart Sunday...took me 7 hours working along to get the truck down to metal as HokieRunner did.

I was able to remove the wiring that hides behind the dashboard without breaking it out...thanks for the heads up on that.

Now time to clean and deaden.
