I plastic dipped mine couple months already and it holds up fine. Make sure you clear coat it after plastic dip.

It is very easy to remove the grill. Open the hood and remove the 10 mm (?)bolts around the grill. Be careful with the latch.

Since you are doing the same process either way I'd paint it if you want it to be more permanent unless you want it back to original but the Plasti-dip will start to come off over time depending on your climate i.e. if you drive in snow regularly is a big factor.

I painted mine originally and after 6 months it had a ton of chips. I have since sanded it back down and plasti-dipped it and because its really stretchy it's holding up much better and have no chips in 2 months including some off roading and a 1,000 mile road trip though mountains. I would plasti-dip for sure. Easier, faster, will last longer (I think).

...x2...

Remove the latch

I painted mine...

1) waste of time
2) took a long time
3) had to mask & prep hecka stuff
4) didn't look good
5) broke the latch

...Breaking the latch, not time and cost effective. I should have replaced it w/ the Limited Grill from all along.

I'm waiting for the Winter Weather to destroy it before I spent $200 on one, I think it's been (2) Seasons already & it's holding up, so I haven't took the dive to purchase one.

I just plasti dipped the center portion of my grill today. I think it came out pretty well. As you can see, I chose to mask it off on the truck rather than take the whole grill off and risk harming the hood latch. Worked out pretty well.

I also was too scared to put clear coat on it. I read some issues with the clear coat and just got scared. I figure, I'll start with this and see how it lasts.

Just thought I'd share the experience because it was this thread that i saw a couple weeks ago that motivated me to do it.

Oh yeah! I forgot you were like my 'true' inspiration on the center part of the grill. I was a big fan and decided to copy! Lol.

Thanks!

I did that to my old silver Accord actually and it looks great on your rig. I just don't know if it would look right on my color or not. Plus, I'm nervous to rip apart headlights, and bumpers again... lol

plastidip grill

so i just got done spraying my grill with rustoleum bedliner, and i couldnt be happier with the results. i took it off and taped off the parts that were already black, then wet sanded it with 800 grit, i sprayed on two layers of primer, then did three coats of the bedliner. i contemplated spraying the toyota emblem aswell, but decided on removing it then putn it back on after the bedliner dried. heres some pics...
