2004 4runner ltd loud clunk/bang noise when stopped at light

I Have a 2004 4runner limited and this problem only occurs once in a while. I was stopped at a red light and all of a sudden i heard a loud bang from the rear and I could almost feel it....I honestly thought for a second that i got rear-ended, but looked in the mirror and no one was even there.....This only happens once in awhile and I brought it to the attention of the dealership and they looked at me as if i was crazy......they said they checked it out and cant find any problem and wont make that noise for them....so was wondering if anyone knows what that is and how to fix, scared one day something going to go terribly wrong and cost my arm and leg
Thanks

Sounds like the classic drive shaft clunk, I'm surprised that more Toyota dealerships don't know more about this. There was a TSB for the same problem with the Lexus SUV's. Us 4Runner owners got the shaft (nice pun there). Pretty easy fix if you're willing to get under your 4Runner. Plenty of pictures and discussion here:

Yep, classic driveline clunk. I grease mine every oil change and haven't heard it since.

Do a search for the zerk fittings on the shafts and get a grease gun.

No need to lift the vehicle, though it does need to be cool.

Slide under there and methodically go through the fittings. I found that you can get many the first time, then roll the vehicle back to expose the others.

THEN, hit the slip yolk on the rear shaft with about 15 - 20 pumps of grease. Carefully watch the shaft as you do this, and if you see it expand due to the grease stop.....you have met the limit.

If you do not see it expand, I would think no more than 20 pumps is necessary.

Then you will need to drive in a way that works the yolk. Speedbumps or rollers that cause the rear to rise and squat will do it, but it will take a few days to really get the CLUNK out.

Good luck and keep us posted.
