Owners with GPS/Navigation/Backup camera question

For those that have the navigation unit from Toyota...how is it? I am looking at an '06 Limited without it and I am wondering if I will miss having one in-dash. My previous cars have always had it built in. What other options does the factory nav unit offer? Heating and cooling options, system setup etc....

Also, how is the factory backup camera?

i love the back up camera, but that's about it. you can't do anything with them while you are in motion and i think in 07 they eliminated the over ride capability. i have been looking at other aftermarket systems that will replace this. i did find a pretty nice OEM nav unit from toyota that looks pretty nice. just my $.02

Is the navigation pretty clumsy? I had an '06 Jeep Commander with factory nav and it was awful!! No touch screen, all button pushing

I have always hated factory nav, for 1 reason. Updates. Car headsets are always years behind everything else.

A good smartphone these days has built in navigation that beats a cars hands down in up to date maps.

I wouldn't let the facory nav be a make or break decision. I like the camera for hooking up my trailer, that's about it. The fisheye lens isn't very useful otherwise. As far as the nav itself it's mostly touch screen but not the best choice. I keep mine updated but my iPad navigation is called upon more often than should be necessary because of the lack pf ability to find many addresses and places.

I personally love the navigation. Back up camera gives you a nice clear image of whats behind you. Its a good quality camera, nothing pixelated. The navigation is very user friendly as well. All touch screen.

From the navigation you can control the bluetooth (telephone) which isn't too great on these things. I don't care much for it at least

You can set maintenance and reminders for you in the navigation system.

There is only a 4 disk CD changer so if you thought it was a 6, think again.

The navigation has a tilt feature that I don't ever use.

My favorite part about the navigation is that it isn't annoying like most, and if you hit the "map" button it tells you exactly what road your on and what street number. Very helpful if foreign to the area but you have the exact street number.

I like it alot and use it all the time. It is one of the reasons I special ordered my vehicle too. I would order it again. Now that I have done the nav override mod and updated the DVD to remove the "I Agree" screen, it is sooo much better. If it held another 2 mp3 cd's it would be even better. The anytime reverse camera mod and DVD movie on Nav screen mods are up next.

I love it. Like J.A., I special ordered my 4Runner to have. The OEM nav in the 4th gen only integrates the audio system, climate control remains separate from the nav. Beginning in 2006, it added Bluetooth phone support, 4-disc MP3 playback and auxiliary audio input. The backup camera is super handy and makes parking a breeze. But even without it, the 4th gen's cargo mirrors make parking fairly easy as well.

Aside from getting locked out while in motion, I have no complaints about Toyota navigation systems. The map graphics and speed of processing works just fine for me. I have nav in my '04 Camry as well. If and when I'm in the market for another Toyota, I will be getting nav on it again. No regrets with Toyota navs.

I ended up with a 2008 Limited V8 w/o nav. Looked at ones with nav but ended up picking the one with least miles... I don't regret it the JBL sounds good enough. I will be going aftermarket nav in the future with direct ipod connectivity.
