color matching

Hi. I've been browsing this forum for a while and it is extremely informative. Based on several test drives and what I've read here I have decided on a 2005 v6 Sport Edition. The only decision left is the color and hence my questions.

I'm pretty set on a light color (silver or white) and prefer silver because it is metallic and I have read that white is not chip resistant. A search resulted in a member noting that the white chips easily.

I have noticed that the color of the bumpers, cladding and hood scoop on the silver does not match the steel body panels on overcast days. In bright sunlight the color matching is fine, but on cloudy days the painted plastic looks off, particularly the hood scoop which has a pinkish tint.

At first my girlfriend thought that I was nuts, but she pointed out a gold SR5 to me that was really off (cladding vs. body) under cloudy conditions. She also agrees that the silver hood scoop does not match the body.

Am I seeing things or is this condition real? Also, regarding the white, I noticed that the plastic parts are more of a pure white versus a slightly warmer white on the body panels. Again, is this a real condition? Is the white paint still not chip resistant?

As you can tell, I am picky about color consistency. I realize that color matching from metal to plastic is difficult for lighter colors and some cars (Honda) are really off. Any responses from silver and white owner is appreciated. Thanks.

I have white and it does not chip any more than any other color. Plus, white cleans up easier than dark colors. You can't see swirl marks and etc. I like silver too but it is becoming so cliche to have one. If I see another silver runner in town I will puke. I like mine because it is different.

Galactic Grey is the best color hands down, it hides dirt, looks great when all clean and shiny, and I must say, quite classy lokking compared to many car colors I've seen around today. There are too many silver an white vehicles in NJ so I like standing out, and I love the fact that seem to be one of the few people in Morris County with the cladding on my 4Runner. I've had many compliments on both the color and the way the cladding makes the 4Runner look "tougher" Yeah! ( of course , being a 5"3" pettite woman kinda puts the tough thing to rest...lol)

Whatever color you choose, you will love this truck!!

My white paint and my cladding w/sport bumper look really good together IMO. That is why I chose the cladding. The cladding looks tough. Ever notice that the cladding has the design in it instead of being perfectly round like in the painted version? I like them both but I really like the way my runner looks tough.

how quickly this thread turned into, "My color is better than yours..."

BTW - Stratosphere Mica is the shizzle...

Back to your topic, I don't pay that much attention and this is possibly why I got a darker color. Darker colors seem to blend in easier for me.

yeah...I've got several chips on the front end after only six months, but I don't care. I like white. It's obvious that everyone here thinks that their color is the best. It may be hard to get an objective answer on this one.

Go with the color you like the 4Runner in. I don't think any of them are more "chip resistant" then the others. Most darker colors just show the chips more. White also will show the chips a lot more. Silver hides just about everything because the paint is not as reflective as some other colors (still looks good though). It's just personal preference, the Runner looks good in all colors.

Get black...you want black...black is the best..black..you want it...black...

So just decide what color you like the best.

Thank you for the replies, but please re-read my original question. My concern is about color matching on the painted plastic cladding, bumpers, and hood scoop versus the painted metal body panels.

Seriously though, I wouldn't worry too much about the color mismatching. You are probably the only one who is ever going to notice. I'm pretty picky about details on a paint job, and was thinking about getting a silver T4R, and I never noticed. Plus, if the white really does chip, then I think it would be better to have slightly mismatching paint than missing paint

tsb,
I agree with the Galactic Gray and that is what I got because the colour mismatch is one of the things I noticed on a silver. I looked at my paint again and don't notice a matching issue with GG.
