Frozen calipers?
I replaced my front rotors and pads last week and found out surprisingly that they are being pushed together constantly(like its always breaking, RPMs increased by 500 at normal speeds and the wheel become quite hot after a short trip)
The dealer said that it's because of frozen calipers and they want 650 to replace both with so called "toyota manufactured parts"
Does that sounds right? Or should I take it to somewhere else?
Thanks a lot!

It's a super common problem with the 4runner. These toyota calipers stop well until they seize.... They are pretty expensive you could call around but that seems about right.

Yep.... I just went in for pads and both of my fronts were frozen... Had to replace pads, calipers and rotors. That price is about what I paid. But that included rotors. I think the calipers were $100 each.

I get about 2MPG better now that this was fixed though! Had no idea they were frozen.

Thanks for the replys!
Is it also common for the rear calipers to froze as well or it's only a common problem for the front ones?

It's a known problem..and I've replaced my fronts twice...
HOWEVER... $650 is ludicrous.....I got mine from a reputable auto parts store for $90 each....They lasted as long or longer then the OEM calipers...Labor to replace these is trivial....Takes me less then an hour to do both....A good mechanic with a lift should be able to do this job faster then I can...Find a good independent shop....That price is way way too high.

I would say if its $650 to replace Calipers, rotors, pads, and go ahead and do a brake fluid flush, then that sounds reasonable... but if its just for calipers they are charging too much.

Actually that price is for calipers only, I called some other repairshops in town and the quoted price range is like 380~460.
Which way do you guys think I should go?

I had all four of mine replaced under warranty when they seized. If you still have warranty they should be covered.

Definitely go to local shop...it's literally 2 bolts and some bleeding of the brakes. I mean it's pretty simple stuff any mechanic can do that.

Now that you mention it I had mine flushed too when they did all this... If you can do the work yourself it is MUCH cheaper. I just didnt have the time or the inclination.
The stealerships always rob you. If you can find someone else to do the work for less I say do it.

what year is your 4R? same thing is happening to my '06. I'm researching if I can install Tundra calipers/pistons. I read here on the site that they match the 4R. I have a '04 Tundra with 151K+ mi, same brakes, Pads half way. needles to say they're great. If they fit in my 4R. I will changeover. versus installing something that's gonna break again.

Its a 03, I've also seen those tundra upgrade threads but it seems that they are all for 3gen 4runners and they cut the dust shield to make it fit. Did you find out whether this would work for the 4gen as well?
