Bilstein 5100's Specific to 2010+ 4Runners
I noticed that Bilstein now lists part 24-196499 as the front height adjustable 5100 series shock for the 2010-2012 4Runner. Hasn't everyone been using 24-186711 (for the 03-09 4Runner) ?
I have no idea what the difference is, but did find that the new shock and the old shock have different compressed and extended lengths:
Year ---- Model ------- Compressed --- Extended
03-09 --- 24-186711 ------ 17.03 ------- 22.56
10-12 --- 24-196499 ------ 17.57 ------- 22.48
Anyone have any thoughts as to why a new shock was needed, when we've been running the older ones for a few years without issue?

I spoke to a higher up rep from them a few weeks ago. I mentioned that they did not list a 5100 series adjustable for the 10+ 4R on their site, I had told him people were using the 'old' ones. I asked if they were going to release an 'official' one for the 10+. He said they were and they had 'just arrived' but had not been shipped out to dealers yet, he gave me the part number but it was for the old one (not sure if he thought that was the new one and I was not at a computer to double check when he gave it to me).

That picture is from the Bilstein off-road application guide, published in July or some such. This being said, the part is unobtainium right now. If you look at the bilstein data sheets, where it's listed, the new shock is a quarter inch shorter or so in terms of stroke.
Also, Bilstein changed their parts numbering, which has resulted in vendors only listing up to 2009 model years on their web sites.
I emailed Toytec about it a week ago, no answer either, I guess they also threw a null pointer exception when they saw that (or don't know, or don't care).

Sorry, I can't help but think less of you when you won't take the time to spell things right or use proper grammar. Deal with it. I don't care if you're ESL either, because I am too.

I ran into the same problem when I tried to order them from my local off-road shop. They said Bilstein only makes them for up tp 2009. They told me they would order the 09' ones, but I would be stuck with them if they didn't fit. I decided to wait until they actually list them for the 2010-12 just in case.

I asked Toytec as well and got this response:
"We have tested the shock on the 5th gens and they work great. They are valved for a 4runner, and I can assure you there is no issue running them on your 5th gen."
All of their 5th gen coilovers run on this shock and no one has had a problem. I went ahead and bought the 03+ shocks because I'm sick of waiting on Bilstein (I mean it's been 3 years already! Come on!)- they arrived yesterday and look like they will work just fine compared to my stock shock.

Any 4Runner on this forum with 5100's up front will be running the 2009 shock, it is well known they work just fine.
This being said, we're caught between the vendors not wanting to adopt the new Bilstein part numbering system, and Bilstein not shipping their new (2 year old) product for the new vehicles, probably because nobody orders them, probably because they don't have an old-style part number.
It happens. Nobody cares.

The vehicle weight, and especially how the weight shifts while driving, braking, etc., is different. While the 03-09 valving seems to work fine, and min and max compression exceed those of the 5th gen, valving specifically for the vehicle will be better, if only subtly so. It's that "good enough" vs. "correct" thing.

Anybody else notice the catalog also shows the same new part number for the 2010-11 FJ? What changes were made to the FJ that would require a new shock there?

I just picked up the new bilstein's 24-196499 last week. I was told the difference is the bushing mount on the bottom of the strut. Plan on installing them on Monday.

OK, the obvious question is, "Where did you find them?"

There is a distribution co. thats works directly with the Bilstein factory in Poway (San Diego) called ASI. Their website is shox.com these shocks are not listed on their website or Bilstein's. If you call the Bilstein Poway location they will confirm this part # and ASI(shox.com) has them.

NO. It is just the front strut (adjustable 0-2.5") the rear shock part# is 33-187174 or they also have the 5160 (resivor shock) for the rear, part #25-177909
