Retractable Running Boards

Thought I’d start a specific thread vs high jacking others.

Looking to purchase a 12 Limited but two local dealers insists that the running boards offered through the brochure and on Toys website, do not exist. With some help from T4R members I got some guidance but I’m not making much progress.

Has anyone purchased or ordered this option? If so what is the option code?

Given I have these on other vehicles it's must have. I’m not aware of any aftermarket options (ie AMP).

The code is KG for the power running boards.

Both dealers say that KG is only for the Tundra. It could be that the both dealers are uninformed.

Even on the Toyota website where you can build your new 4Runner you can add the optional automatic running boards. I think your dealers not properly educated.

I have a copy of the 2012 4Runner brochure given to sales staff on what to highlight about the new 2012 4Runner and how it compares to its competitors (Explorer, Grand Cherokee and Pathfinder).

In there is a listing of all options both factory and accessories and their respective codes. If your dealer doesn't know this, I suggest you find another dealer or ask them to crack open their own 2012 4Runner sales brochures (Not the one they give to customers) in addition to relearning how to read the Toyota regional inventory database which lists all the codes as well.

I'll scan a copy of what I have and post it here for everyone to enjoy!

I would be curious to know how the brochure compares the T4R to it's competition.

The comparisons are pretty petty IMHO. They cover, more HP, more Torque, higher ground clearance, bluetooth streaming, party mode (which no one else has...LOL), and a whole slew of other minor stuff. I'm surprised they didn't highlight the superior reliability of the 4Runner. I'll scan the stuff tomorrow and post it up for everyone.

Edit: Hmm...its 2.44 mb and exceeds the forum limits. Anyone have suggestions on where I should upload this file to so everyone can download it?

Just spoke to Toyota Customer Experience Center 1-800-331-4331 who also called my dealer to varify the Auto Board code is KG and only availble as factory install (cannot purchase from parts dept and is installed on the assembly line by special order). I would think some dealers would preorder the vehicles this way but the cost may deter buyers.

Not sure why AMP (aftermarket power steps) hasnt designed one for the 4R.

I sent an email to my dealer to let me know when they get one with those boards.. I want to see what is so special about them that they cannot be installed separately. I smell BS.

Even if it is 4 bolts and a wire to plug in, they're probably going to be $2k from the parts department for retrofitting on our models.

I have to say i like this option better than the surf board option that hangs off the runner now. This is why i still make my wife have to jump in the car. no good option.

Because it's an option ,not an add on accessory.

Again ,it's going to be a wiring harness problem again too. From what I read it's wired into the gauges, a separate switch on the dash to turn it off/on, the door switches and has sensors to detect if it hits something when extending. Wouldn't surprise me if it had it's own separate ECU for it also. All of that is going to have to be custom wired for it to work on a 10-11 4Runner and you would need the 2012 wiring diagrams.

It would probably be easier and cheaper to just bug AMP Research to make one for the 4Runners and a bunch of people e-mailed them. It's a $1500 option on the 4Runner and probably a whole lot more then that for just the parts. AMP's run a little over a $1000 and look like the same thing.
