less car for more money

I paid $25,200 in 04 for a new 2wd sport model & regretfully sold it in 07. I went to a toyota dealership today & was disapointed with the new ones compared to my old one. For example:
Why do the new 4runners have antenna's sticking up?
Why does the interior seem cheap?
What's all that fake chrome garbage/trim?
They are much more expensive as well. I was really disapointed because I've always owned one. I currently drive a 2000 model as a daily driver & love the thing. Maybe I'll look at the Grand Cherokee with the new Pentax engine. Has anyone else noticed this decline in value/quality.

The antenna is a $20 fix if it bothers you that much, hardly a deal breaker.

The interior does not feel cheap to me. Not luxurious, but not cheap. If I wanted woodgrain and more of a luxury car feel I personally would have bought a Highlander Limited.

Some like the chrome, some like black, some like body color. Kinda hard to please everyone now, isn't it? Another easy and cheap fix.

The Jeep is not much less, and the resale value will make you think differently about that decision in a few years. Might as well buy a Ford.

You should go buy a Grand Cherokee. All those "cool features" will be inop. It will loose 50% of its value in about 2 yrs. You cant take it through a carwash since Chryco still has not figured out how to make a vehicle withstand a rain storm. The dealer will sh#t on you. It will fall apart around the engine. Go for it.

Thanks for posting these! I feel sorry for those guys- we simply do not have issues like that on the 5th Gen site.

I like the one where the truck wouldn't turn off, and severely overheated before shutting down. The dealer picked it up and said they could not detect any problem. All normal here at Chrysler! Wow.

Just want to set you straight: Most buyers are getting at least 10% knocked off MSRP.
Here is your research as I'm sure it's easier to rant than it is to research:

I bet you also didn't notice milk has gone up almost 35-45% in those 8 years either.

I just bought a 2012 Limited over a Grand Cherokee. The reliability of the Jeeps over the years is horrible. Also the 3.6l engine has a recall up in Canada for complete engine replacement due to shavings/particles in the engine that may cause the engine to seize.

Thanks for those posts Y2K!

I have friends that talk about how nice the new Chrysler products are. Sure their interiors are pretty sweet, and you get good bang for the buck of options/prices, but that's how they get you. Another example of you get what you pay for.

Knowing of their history and seeing multiple posts of how these guys are dealing with problems on their brand new Jeeps just makes me smile of how much I love Toyota, I never recommend any Chrysler to anyone asking for me for advice.

Your observations from a quick visit to the dealer amount to perceptions, rather than an analysis of observed data, and don't necessarily align with several quality studies, even those based on perception.

Wow man, you really need to do some homework bud.

As others have mentioned, the Antenna is a very easy change.

Cheap Interior? My limited doesn't seem cheap to me at all. The dash, while it is a "harder type plastic" can withstand quite a lot of a beating. In 5-10 years when those fancy jeep dashes are cracking, mine will still be solid as a rock.

Fake Chrome trim? That's just "different strokes for different folks". If you don't like trim, get a trail. Or, a simple mod will allow you to customize your vehicle to any taste.

When I traded in my 2006 4Runner SR5, I got amazing trade in value.

If you decide to go with the jeep, then good luck to you. Just be sure and keep a tow strap handy so that a 4runner can pull you back to the Chrysler dealer.

From Autombile Magazine regarding their 1-month-old, $45k JGC Overland:

associate editor Eric Tingwall noted that the “leather-covered dashboard is wrinkled and rippled and in some places looks perilously close to cracking. Clearly there is an issue with the adhesive used underneath the leather.”

I speak from experience. The last JGC I had was an 06 5.7 ltd Hemi. Something like $45K msrp. By 7500 mile entire front axle assembly was replaced and rear end rebuilt. This took MONTHS of me fighting writing letters, calls, arguing, fighting with Service Mgr just to get them to do a thing. ETC failed around 15K miles almost got me killed in an intersection. Starter going out by 30K miles. ABS module failed at TWO HUNDRED MILES. By 16k miles differential noise was back. Got like $17.5 for it with 36K miles in 08.

The JGC I had before that was an 02 Overland. At 40K miles it needed $5k worth of warranty work in one month. Both diffs rebuilt, dash had to be ripped out to replace plastic HVAC actuator, rain sense wiper module fail, heated seats fail, power steering leak etc. The Jeep dealers (I used several in town) were worthless and ignorant.

The OP here seems more worried about a mast antennae than having a Transfer Case in a 4Runner! As far as chrome, Ive begun to remove it with a $5 can of plastidip. ;)
