Entune vs Std Stereo in Trail Edition
Buying a new 2012 Trail Edition. Should I get it with the new Entune system with the touch screen or just get the standard stereo system? My opinion of factory touch screens is they eventually break and cost a small fortune to replace. I've already got a Garmin GPS so the nav system doesn't impress me all that much.
Thoughts? Thanks!

When I test drove the Prius v, it had the Entune. When we are ready to buy in the spring, we'll definitely choose a trim that has Entune. I had my iphone 4 set up within a minute of turning the car on and it has a much, much better bluetooth streaming setup than the stereo in my SR5. It shows album art, track, artist, album, etc. instead of just 2 lines of text. The ipod interface on my SR5 is clunky and Entune appears to be much better.

Save the money and get an iPad, a good mount, a weekend away, Motion x for the iPad, a new shotgun, and enough for an ice cream cone for you and the Mrs...
Seems car/truck electronics are waaaaaaaaaay behind whats available on the market.

I was totally unimpressed with the Entune system after playing with it for a little bit. The fact is that a good aftermarket head unit will do all of those things and more for less money. I opted for the 2011 with the 15 speaker JBL instead of the 2012 with Entune. I tried to get used to the stock navigation system, but in the end, I had to upgrade to an aftermarket (completed this past weekend).

Did the aftermarket system actually fit into the location of the Entune system or is mounted somewhere else?

Aftermarket Stereo
It fit in the dash with the purchase of some parts.

The beauty of the Entune is that it is app based and as long as iOS and Android stick to the standard bluetooth protocol, the system can quickly and easily continue to be updated. I'd 100% agree with your assessment with hardware based electronic solutions. Presumably, this will be easy to update either over your phone's data connection or via the app on the phone. It is a $1000 option, which really is pretty reasonably priced, IMO.
Aftermarket head units that don't match the aesthetics of the OEM interior bother me too. OCD. Probably why the if I'd do any exterior mods to my T4R, it would be a TE exterior and some black TE wheels. Most everything else is too over the top for me.

Loving the Entunes
JUst got my new Trail edition 10 days ago and already love using the Entunes. I have an old iPod in the dash hooked into the system via the USB (in dash), my Blackberry synchs easily via Bluetooth. The nav is good, not great. Even able to stream Pandora through the BB, but the sound quality is not great, sounds like AM radio. As for speakers, I am happily surprised and it has good sound, even good bass from the front door speakers.

I've listened to both the 8 speaker Entune and the 15 speaker JBL. There's no question that the JBL wins hands down.
As far as durability of a nav, my 2004 Sienna with 125k miles had zero problems with the touch screen or any function of the nav. I traded it in for my new 2011 white 4Runner LE w/ nav and JBL. I mainly wanted the nav to get the larger back-up screen. A third party NAV will almost always be better than OEM IMHO, but that larger back-up screen is key, especially since I have two small children.

Maybe its a blessing in disguise that we can't get the CDN TE with the Entune/NAV, only on the limited. I'll probably use a garmin instead.

4 wire taps and your aftermarket can use your stock integrated backup cam.

I may not have great ears, the stock SR5 radio is fine....plays BT audio great....no hitches on the iphone 4s playlist or streaming Pandora....i hate the orange backlight....being red/green color blind, this drives me crazy....so much so that I may opt to change it for just that.

We have Entune on our 2012. I'm quite happy with it and I'm glad that we waited for a 2012.
