Angry Tire Shop Busted/Stretched "ALL" 24 lug/studs

Took my 5thgen in for its first tire rotation its a 2010 10k miles. Nearest dealership is 1.5 hrs away. I watched them throught the window they ran the nuts up and started torqueing all the tires. I sat back down and within minutes they came to the lobby with the dreaded...Mr. Smith can you come with me please and handed me a busted lug nut....The tech was beside himself he said I have never seen anything like this I cannot tighten down of your studs they all just spin. I put the torque wrench on the a few lugs and they just spun and then it just busted off. He said I am not touching any more lugs. So I said exactly how many did you get to torque down..he replied none of them they all are spinning. I got on the phone and called the Toyota dealership...the service writer said basically sorry about your bad luck but if I would drive it out he would look at it. I replied I cannot drive the vehicle that far the wheels could fall off. He said pay a tow truck to haul it up there then. I said listen there is evedently something going on here and they need to come get it and warranty the work out. He replied absolutely not. I asked to speak to the service manager told him the what was happening. Though he did agree that this was strange he would like to see it but it would not be covered under warrenty work. So filed a complaint with toyota today left the car at the tire shop. Having the local part houses overnight the 24 lugs in to get the car back on the road but wow is all I can say.....

Don't be so down about it. Print this thread and show them, I would almost bet anything that this is the issue. I went through the same thing.

Out of curiousity, were they using a torque wrench, a torque stick or just an impact?

Sorry still new to forums...but yes they were using a torque wrench set @ 80lbs. LOL I will not forget the degreaser/brake cleaner on my next vist. Costly tire rotation.

I have never seen a dealer correctly torque wheels on. It's impact and that's it.

Well, that's better than most tire places do it! I'd love to know the make/model and last torque calibration of the wrench. brockeverly's post has merrit, but i've never seen a torque wrench used at a dealer with a calibration sticker on it.

Locally owned tire shop been here for 30 years..anyhow I agree thats what caught my intrest through the window was he went after them with the wrench rather than the impact. They service my tacoma with out any issue. I am still shaking my head thinking about it. Dunno what it is going to cost for labor but these guys rotate my tires and reset my tpms on the house so I am sure they will work with me. If they dont no worries...

At 24 snapped/stretched lugs, it wasn't the torque wrench. I would be willing to bet it is exactly what mine was, same things happened to me.

Don't mistake what I wrote; I never said it was because of the torque wrench. However, in my opinion, im inclined to disagree with you to a degree. That's not to say that you don't have a valid point as to the cause of some stretching/breaking lugs.

My dealer used a torque wrench. Watched him thru the window. 0 broken studs...so far...
It's pretty much only part of the service I can't complain about...

Impact Wrench (Air)

I have an adjustable Impact Wrench at home I use. How do I make sure it is not set too high? What setting should I use?

Amazon.com: Ingersoll-Rand 231HA Super Duty 1/2-Inch Pnuematic Impact Wrench: Home Improvement

Thanks!

Its just best to use one of these 4 ways to snug them up (or you pneumatic impact - but don't tighten with it), then torque to specs with a good torque wrench. 80 lbs I believe.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Toyotacare include 24 hour roadside assistance including towing to the nearest Toyota dealer? That BS that the dealer wouldn't warranty this problem.

As for torquing your lugs with an impact gun Torque Sticks are the way to go.
