Icon Shift Knob Install Write-up
Alright, gents. I *finally* received my Icon billet shift knobs this evening. One note, is that after almost 10 weeks of hounding them about my order they shipped the wrong part. I ordered the larger FJ/4Runner knob ( 2003 - Current 4Runner Billet Aluminum Transmission Shift Knob - ICON Vehicle Dynamics), but I was shipped the smaller Tacoma knob ( 54510 - Billet Automatic Transmission Shift Knob - ICON Vehicle Dynamics). Incidentally, I actually like the look of the shorter knob anyway now that I have it installed.
So, here's the full super-complicated install...
The original shift knob.
Twist the original shift knob off (lefty loosey!). Action shot!
Bare shifter.
Put the Icon shift knob on the bare shifter and twist it until it is tightly seated on the threads (righty tighty!).
Each icon shifter comes in two parts - the actual knob and the logo/shift pattern that comes with a sticky pad to put it in place. This design is so that you can seat the shift knob very tightly and still have the iconography "straight" after install.
Once the shift knob is seated simply stick the adhesive pad on the top of the shifter.
Peel!
Then put the Icon disc on in a way that's aesthetically pleasing to you and push down until it adheres to the disc.
Boom. New Icon billet aluminum shift knob.
If you bought the 4WD shifter knob then it's simply a repeat.
A couple of notes:
These things fit perfectly. The thread pitch matches our 4Runners exactly. There are no plastic inserts or any other parts than the knob, the adhesive pad, and the iconography discs. Obviously this thread is a bit tongue-in-cheek, but I was confused at first because I expected a plastic liner or adapter, so I searched for "Icon shift knob install" and found one on the Tundra forums that confirmed that it was really just as simple as twist off, twist on. So, hopefully this helps someone that has the same confusion when they open their box!
The adhesive pad on top creates a "mushy" feeling for the iconography discs up top which I actually like. They're a bit elevated, and you can depress them a bit because of the pad.
All-in-all I like them a lot so far!

The Rolls Royce Phantom I bought for my great-great-great-grandson's cousin's brother has a better shift knob than 4Runner's come with.

Mike,
Sorry for hijacking/abusing your thread, but I couldn't help it.
BTW - The new knobs are looking good. Makes me hope mine show up soon.

Haha, no worries. I'm sure you'll love them once you get them, too.
