2012 4Runner Limted Magnetic Gray with Auto Running Boards
Has anyone in the Northeast or New York Area have any problems ordering a 2012 4Runner Limted Magnetic Gray with Auto Running Boards? My dealer keeps saying that the models with the Auto Running Boards are not normally brought to the Northeast so I put in an order a month ago and they just called me today and told me they are no longer producing it.
I would have to special order it which will take 4-5 months for it to arrive.
I am in the New York area and this dealer is in Long Island.
Any help or tiips, I would appreciate it.
I am not in your area but in texas. When I went into the dealership in Dec and talked to them about 2012 4runner and options I was lucky that one was in route same color as the one you wanted with the auto running boards. There was only 2 I believe coming with it. Not sure if they have discontinued it so quickly but I was told that the dealers or distributor orders the configs that they believe they can sell. That may your case. Try searching in other regions and see what they say.
I myself own a Magnetic Grey Limited 4x4 with auto-running boards, but I actually didn't intend to buy one with them. (I was happy enough to purchase one with normal running boards or go after-market). However, the only one the dealer had in stock was this one and they were willing to make a really good deal on current inventory.
Anyway, in your circumstance, maybe it's because of the weather in the Northeast that the dealers choose not to order it. The manual says that heavy snow/icing may interfere with proper auto-running board operation.
It all comes down to what your regional distributor chooses to order. For instance, the Lexus ES350 actually comes with cloth standard (leather is part of a premium package). However, good luck finding any dealership in the country that sells one with cloth.

How do you like the auto running boards, they work OK?

Yep, they work great. I only have one complaint: When I first took delivery, every now and then when I started the car, the running boards would get stuck while retracting and I would have to open/close the door to have them retract properly. (The boards automatically deploy/close when opening/closing the door, respectively.)
It only happened on a few occasions when it was timed perfectly, and is due to the switched power resetting the system or something. Anyway, I either start the car with the door open or I'll wait for the boards to retract before starting the engine.
Edit: To better clarify the problem: They only got stuck while I started the engine in the process of closing the door. If you close the door and then start the engine, no problems.

Yup agreed had the same issue a few times other than that works great. Actually impressed with the time it takes to extend when the door is open.
I have been looking since November. I was originally happy with the standard running boards. I have seen the automatic running boards on some Fords and Cadillacs that made a spark but when I saw it on youtube that drove me over the edge.
There are only 2 video's on youtube that show it in action.

Same experience here when starting and closing the doors around the same time. Other than that, the running boards work very well. They are surprisingly sturdy and tuck away quite nicely. I was trying to get a video of them in action, but haven't been able to because of the weather and I got lazy. haha At first I didn't want them, but now, I absolutely love them!
I wonder if they could be a retro fit to a 2010? I love the no board look, the there is no way my wife or heathan child could get in or out with the boards. Anyone have access to the 2012 FSM?

It must be the area cause I put my name down around that time and picked it up on Boxing Day 26th Dec.
Ha, me too. Although I would get with the Antster and figure out how to deploy them via a switch when driving. Then I would add spikes to them, Ben Hur style. And LED lights, of course.

One of the members checked on retrofitting the boards to a 2010/2011 and wasn't able to find it....yet. There's another 3rd party company that does the power boards but when asked about making one for the 5th Gen 4Runner's, they said they had no plans. If you do a search under "power running boards" you might find that thread ;)
