Winch Use = Nav Reboot

Finally wired up and installed the rope on my winch. All went ok but while testing it under load I did notice that a few times the Nav turned off and started back up (as it does when the truck starts: warning message, etc), sort of as it's rebooting.

Truck was running the whole time with increased rpm (2500) at times. Everything else's seemed perfectly normal.

Wiring was pretty straight forward and grounds seem fine.

Thoughts?

Was it like a brown out type of a situation where lights got dim stuff like that?

Stock Battery. All other systems operated normally, the revs did not decrease, the winch operation was smooth. Only the Nav kept rebooting, maybe 4 times. Other times it stayed on without issue.

I did however curse at it but I don't think it cared.

I had a similar experience with my 77 chevy blazer, by similar I mean instead of NAV, it was my Head unit, but as soon as I added a second battery and upgraded my Alt, i had no issues, didnt even have to rev it after that.

Sounds like a voltage drop. The Nav unit needs X amount to keep running, it drops and it reboots. You see it all the time down 'brown out' issues, certain electronics need more juice than others.

^^^^
What he said....easy fix. (I think) Turn off the Nav system prior to using the winch? If your outside the rig using the winch, no need to have the nav/head unit or anything else running in the rig, right? Just sayin. Be safe.

Is your main power wire for the winch hooked up directly to the battery?

^ Ha! Already in the works. I was more curious why it was just the NAV and nothing else.

Think of computer power supplies, voltage drop means shutdown time.

Does the nav only restart on starting the winch? maybe you could try one of those late 90's baller capacitors used for audio amps =p
