285's Too Big for Stock Trail Wheels?
I just put a 3 inch lift on my trail and planned to install 285/70/17 Duratracs on the stock trail wheels. I was told by a large tire dealer that 285's were too big for the stock wheel, would make the center of the tire (tread) bulge and wear fast and thus were not recommended. Anyone else run into this? Valid?

I run 285/70/17 BFG T/A on my stock trail rims with a 3" Toytec ultimate lift. I was told by one dealer the same thing you were. I went ahead and had them installed, have about 14K on the tires/ setup, have them rotated every 4-5k miles, and haven't had any issues with them wearing excessively in the middle.

Center bulge is not do to size, it's do to pressure. Even stock tires will bulge if they're over inflated.

1engineer - thanks - I took the time to read each of the threads you linked but didn't see an answer to my question - I may have missed it. I'm not asking about rubbing issues - but rim width on a Trail. It was my understanding many folk are running the 285s on stock Trail wheels - i could be wrong.
Winstondmv - Good to know you haven't had any issues - new wheels weren't exactly part of my immediate plan.
GrantK - the sales rep told me 285s inflated to required standard pressure would buldge... even when not overinflated.

Recommended rim width for a 285 is 7.5 inches. Does that mean your Runner will explode in a spectacular ball of fire if you mount them on the stock 7 inch wide wheels? No way. 285's do look better on a wider rim, but they will work just fine on a 7 inch rim. FWIW I ran 2 sets of 285's on my Chevy Z71 with stock 7 inch wide rims and never had any issues.

Post #7 in the first link I gave you above. This guy ran stock wheels with 285's. If you are asking anyone to certify that 285's will fit with no issues including wear to the middle, good luck with that. Anyway, my examples just show yes, people do mount 285's on stock rims.
"EDIT: the 285 tires mentioned above were P285/70R17 Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armors mounted on stock TE wheels and if they ever rubbed, I never noticed it. I added the new TRD wheels recently and the tires started to rub the mudflaps just a bit (mostly when in 4H and turning at near full lock) -- I think the offset/backspacing of the TRDs is just a bit different than the stock wheels but haven't confirmed this yet. Anyway, I got a set of LT285/70R17 Duratracs mounted this past weekend and they are at least 1/4 in taller overall and have a ~1/2" wider tread contact patch than the Silent Armors. These Duratracs definitely rub the mudflap when turning and the suspension compresses in normal driving (i.e. turning into a parking lot, etc). I have the mudflaps removed right now and am investigating if the tires are going to actually rub the body mounts that are located behind the mudflaps -- initial driving the past 2 days looks promising that I won't have to break out the grinder and chop off some of that useless steel on the body mount, but I need to find a few rocks/moguls and flex the suspension to know for sure. I'm getting ready to add some adjustable Bilsteins and will have the alignment done after the install and am going to have them increase the caster per Harper7's recommendation above. "

telockey,
Find a different sales person, the one you've been dealing with doesn't know what they're talking about and will probably give other wrong info.

Shadow274 - Now i am totally confused (which doesn't take much) since the trail has a 7.5 rim versus the 7.0 on the SR5 - and the sales guy knew that.
Funny thing - I'm running a second set of 285s (duratracs) on my Chevy Z71 as well! I haven't had a problem - didn't realize it had only a 7 inch wide rim. Same sales guy sold me those....
GrantK - i bet you are dead on but i figured better be safe and ask those on this forum that know.
I'd still appreciate to hear if anyone with a bunch of miles on 285s on stock trail wheels has center wear issues.

He has TE wheels. TE wheels are already 7.5'' . The sidewalls on 285s with stock TE wheels are pretty flat, not bulged out (making a more bulged center). Per America's Tire when I got mine, their computer said that 285s were fine for the TE, but not the SR5.

20k on my 285 duratracs. No wear issues. I do keep up with rotations and balances.

Thanks for the responses. For what its worth, no other salesperson stated that the 285s were too big for stock rims - so I went with it. I had a 3 inch lift installed and am running 285/70/17 duratracs with no rubbing. I have not had the chance to get out and flex it however.

I'm bumping this because of a few posts in the For Sale thread and did not want to sidetrack there. (And there is no way in hell I'm starting another 285 tire thread). I was planning on 285 Duratrac on 7.5" wide TE OEM wheels. Any issues like mentioned below?

If you don't air down that much or do rocky trails they would be OK.
