New Car break in period MPH and mileage

So I bought a new 4Runner TE 2012. My dealer handed the keys and recommended me not to drive over 75MPH for 500 miles. Its been a while since I bought a new car, last time I was told it was 65MPH for 1000 miles. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Read the manual. The truth will set you free.

Yes read the manual. You want to drive at different speeds/RPM's and make sure the engine's warmed up. Just don't beat the piss out of it for the first 1,000 miles and then get the oil changed and have at it!!!!

I especially beat the piss out of it for the first 1000 miles and find it helps to set the piston rings a little tighter to prevent oil passing the rings. Did some research on it when i bought my first Subaru WRX and never had the normal issues everyone else did by doing so.... just what i have done ever since and never had an issue

Agree to "break it in" like you're going to drive it. For me its pedal to the metal. Never had a problem with doing this.

Reading the original post just about caused my heart to skip a beat. I just bought a brand new 4Runner (yes I've seen the abbreviation T4R, I just don't feel worthy enough to use it yet) yesterday. Total of 439 miles on it now, 234 when I picked it up yesterday.... I drove approx. 90 miles today to and from my home town at 80mph the entire 90 miles. I quickly went and read the manual, and here is a pic of that page:

To me 80mph is not a high speed at all. The ECO light was even on while I was driving at 80mph. I did drive it a little hard on some country roads, but only for a very brief period. Feeling okay about it now. I wish my dealer would have pointed out there was a "break-in period". This is the first brand new car I have ever owned and I'm wanting it to last me indefinitely. I'm hoping to drive it until it's old, then turn it in to an off-roading vehicle.
