Kinzoku Fab 5th Gen Rear Spare Tire Carrier

I was cruising Facebook and saw this on one the 5th Gen 4Runner groups I am in. Pretty interesting design, definitely outside the box thinking. They said they are shooting for around $600 for the base carrier.

I like the simplicity but I’ll have to see some other people’s reviews after it’s been out for a while to see how that flat plate where the hinge mounts holds up. I know it’s think but it seems like it might want to bend over time.

I got a message back from Michael, and he said that the carrier is a weld-on and that he's also working on a bolt-on option as well.

the spindle mount should be boxed in, or at least have a few gussets on it.

I wouldn't call it outside of the box thinking. This type of tire carrier has been done. When the 5th Gen first came out in 2010 a company (forget which) built a tire carrier which left the plastic of the bumper cover in tack.

I also would be worried about that spindle mount. A spare tire is a lot of weight hanging off the back, and the tires like to bounce and shake.

Kinzoku Fab 5th Gen Rear Spare Tire Carrier

He does good work but the design needs to be improved a bit. Throw a 100# wheel and tire combo on there and it will wobble and shake. Side view shows it really close to the rear hatch.

It’s not the final production piece but he is on the right track. Strengthen it up and make it bolt in and it’ll sell like crazy. Not sure why he’s shooting for $600 price point. His stuff is cheap, should pay himself more. This should compete with Rigid price wise.

It’s also not unique. 95% copy of IMP fabs setup.

I agree. Don’t think that tubing will be enough. Idc how strong he thinks that boxed arm is. The pivot action will be too much.

Maybe he will hop on here and use our advice to make it better.

I like the idea. I've considered my own design, but I really don't want my tire on the back. I want it underneath where there's already a spot for it.

That said - there's a few things that can be done to solve the torsion issue. The biggest one is to use two hinge points spaced apart. There's a reason every OEM version of a tire carrier that exists uses two hing points. If it's not possible the next best option is to reduce the lever arm and position the tire close to the pivot point.

Kaymar has made these for decades. So it's not like IPM was an original design.

But so far there's not a whole lot out there for the 5th gen, so I think it's great to see someone making another option.

I haven't seen anything like it before, didn't realize other companies were making something similar. Still interested to see how this design holds up and the final price point.

Really looking forward to someone putting these out. Obviously this one needs work before you can shake it around offroad. I wait and lerk.

Personally I don't get what rigid is selling. Reduces your departure angle by another 2"-3", add weight, reduces visibility, and "looks cool"? Sure your spare is a bit more protected but I'm willing to bet that decreased departure angle would make you miss a spare mounted underneath (most times) anyways. Basically your spending 600+ to mall crawl and make getting into your hatch more of a pain. Guess it's an option if you wanted to run two spares. IDK seems like something for #overlanders.

I like Detours of Maine's version better than Rigids version. It is also cheaper
