Who is still happy with their 255/80’s?

I’ve been researching this tire size for some time now. I’ve been reading everything I can find on here. Everyone seems to love them! But... what I’ve noticed is that most of the people that chimed in saying they love them... are now sporting 285/70’s. Please chime in if you moved away from 255/80’s and into 285/70’s. How do you feel about the change? Or did the opposite please chime in as well. Thanks for any feedback.

Sub'd because I'm considering 255/80s as well

Also considering these. Coming from285’s which I find to be somewhat obnoxious after 8 years. Sub’d, looking forward to comments.

I have always liked the pizza cutters as well. I am not a huge fan of the Ridge Grappler but they measure the tallest and seem to be in the middle of the weight range with the other offerings in that size. Very slim pickings in this size.

I have the Cooper ST Maxx in that size. I've put 15K miles on them, and it's hard to tell if they've worn much (still a lot of tread left). I haven't done any serious off-roading with them, but on the road they've been good. No complaints.

I don't have any plans to change the tire size. If I did, it might be back to stock but that's for different reasons (not tire related).

Moved away from the 255/80 st Maxx because of a tire pull. More or less had the same issue. It's on the Tacoma forums too. I think even a Jeep forum. Had them for only 8000 miles. Had tons of tread left and only had two off road trips with them.

They did awesome off road for what I did.
Still easy to accelerate with some power loss.
Definitely got louder within the 8000 miles but that was no big deal to me.
I wasn't sure if it was my suspension setup at the time so this could be negated: but some or most said 35-40 psi was the sweet spot. All those rode rough for me and any lower the tire wear just didn't look great.
Sometimes squirrelly on the highway from what I could remember.

My cousin in the Philippines has a Nissan patrol with them on (a bigger size) and he even noticed the right sided pull.

I would still have them of it wasn't for that pull. Letting go of the steering wheel, i was able to change lanes to my right lol. Alignment was perfect too. I really wanted to love them though.

Swapped to 285/70 ridge grapplers
Definitely a loss of acceleration.
Rubs the hell out of my upper control arms (but I knew that going into the setup I have).
Much smoother and more plush you could say.
More stable on the highway.
A lot more quiet.
Drives straight.

I probably enjoy my 285s more, especially with the more plush ride depending on psi.
I'd like to give the 255/80 Ridge Grapplers a chance in the future. While the 285s look great, I just love the skinny tire look.

I am running 255/75's, Goodyear DuraTracs. I really like them. Reasonably quiet, good traction, looks great, without the drawbacks of the heavier wider tire.

I'm still on 255/75 K02s C, at least for another week until BFG resolves my warranty replacements. Then it's pretty much back to stock size in p rated AT2. Slight chance I'll stay with 255. Minor drawbacks Ive felt running this narrow width are:

Truck feels top heavy/tilting during slow sharp downhill turns

Bumps / road seams hit harder due to narrower contact patch vs wider tire. And since there's no extra rubber to absorb that energy, it must be greater impact on suspension parts.

Need to purchase 5th tire for spare

Looks bad from rear when compared with mud flap width

I agree, the RG's in a 255/80 have caught my eye for a 275/70 replacement. I love the pizza cutter look, had the 255's on our 80-series and I loved them. They have their drawbacks as noted above but they are also better in regards to fuel economy which matters when you drive 25-30K miles a year. I just have to convince myself that I can live with the RG's, based on what I have seen with buddies and the forums, I am not too keen on the tire.

How do you like the Shrockworks bumper? I see you are in Spring, we are down in Bay City. We hit the beach down in Matagorda almost weekly, I see you frequent the beach up that way as well. Be sure to hit me up if you plan to make it down this way.

I think most of the 255/80's out in the market are intended for dually rear tires. For this reason, most have really thick sidewalls. So I was hesitant about the ride quality. Ultimately, this is why I stayed away from them and looked for a light, P-rated 285/70. I ended up getting Firestone Destination P285/70/17 A/Ts. They are 47lbs per tire and ride really smooth. No drastic change in acceleration and I like the way they smoothed out the shift points of the A/T.

Also, you can make your 285 look a little narrower by mounting it on a narrower wheel. Stock trail wheel is 7.5" wide. Pro wheel is narrower at 7". I like the way a 285 looks on a narrow wheel.

I have had the 255/80 Ridge Grapplers on my rig since January and am absolutely happy with them. They are everything I had expected and look cool to boot. I get a lot positive comments on them as well.

Many thanks for those comments.

This is what I fear. On the one hand, I like the idea of a low-weight LTC in 255 75 17 but on the other hand, I am a bit concerned for off camber situations, especially with LTC or P. For some reason, 255s are 7.5-8 tread width on 7 whereas my 265 Wildpeaks are 8.9-9.1 on 7.5. So that can be 1" difference per tire on a high center of gravity vehicle. And if I am to go LTE for the stiffer sidewalls, I would just stay 265. So it feels a bit like lose-lose to me.

All 255 80s are LTEs which makes sense. That's a different ball game from 255 75. Cannot comment on those.
