Caution changing tires

I tried searching, but couldn't find the thread about what to do to prevent the tire shop from breaking off the tire lugs. I remember someone took their truck to a tire shop and they basically broke all the lugs off after the tire swap. One of the tips was to ask them to hand tighten the nuts, not use the gun. I forgot what was the other tip? Thanks in advance!

yep, impact guns can strip your lug's and lug nut's thread, and literally crack your lugs nuts. it can be prevented with hand tightening your lugs and using a proper torque wrench (maybe this is what you forgot)
 
Yup I was standing right there when the tire guy broke one of my studs.

He said "woh, I guess my torque wrench is broken!"

I said "Maybe...but my stud is broken for sure."

They paid for the parts and labor of course but it still pissed me off.
 
Been a common problem on Toyotas for a long time. Has happened to me over the years on an FJ 40 and an FJ 62 I used to own as well as my first gen 4Runner too. I keep spare lugs and nuts in my TE as it has happened once with it as well. My long time tire guy was using his new Snap-On digital torque wrench set to 82 ft lbs, but still sheered at about 60 lbs he figured right in front of me. No big deal if you have the parts on board, but an unexpected pain in the arss nonetheless.
