Is the JBL upgrade an upgrade vs entune?

OK - Maybe I am just getting spec-blindness but a couple of questions about the sounds system and nav.

I see the JBL system lists 15 speakers and the Entune lists 8. Maybe they are the same minus the number of speakers?

Can any of you enlighten me on the biggest difference between the Entune and JBL or are they the same with the exception of more speakers in the Optional JBL system (in a Limited)?

I want the best stock sound system they have and best navigation/screen. My sedan run a top of the line Logic7 system which rocks and I want to at least be close.

I want to know if it's worth holding-out for the JBL 15 speaker option in a vehicle I want that has everything else. That is, is it that much better. Subjective to some extent, I know, but want to ask.

Searches in the forum just don't get me to a good answer.

Thanks!

The JBL has a larger screen and is a DVD based nav. It also has a sub-woofer in the back. It has an integrated back up camera (displays on the nav screen), voice activation, and a CD changer. It also has live traffic that displays on the nav with use of satellite radio. I really like this feature personally.

The Entune gives you a 4 disc in-dash CD changer. And uses your smart phone for apps and what not. Be aware that if the app on your screen is using data, that comes out of your cell phone plan. And, if you don't have your phone, they don't work.

If you can get the JBL, get the JBL. It is much much better IMO.

Go to the Toyota site, select the 4Runner, then go to "Photos and Colors" and look at the interior photos. The nav screen they show there is the JBL.

Exactly what I was wondering. Thanks.

I don't care about having a CD changer these days but DO want a larger screen for sure. As long as I am starting with their "best" audio setup, I can always tweak speakers etc if needed.

Thanks again.

Does the entune NAV work without your phone?

I thought I wanted the entune stereo because it was unavailable with the JBL option. The JBL system sounds much better and I was unaware the NAV screen was larger. I wish my system were JBL although updating the NAV via DVD is kind of lame. At least the entune option does it wirelessly.

One of the biggest differences (IMO) is that the Entune comes with HD radio. It's amazing what a differnace that makes. Also Entune has upgrable software, JBL unit does not. Although you can buy a map DVD to up grade just the map... but you have to buy that and it only changes the map. Entune may not have the sub, but I think its a better unit.

Thanks -- I find it bizarre that the JBL isn't avail with entune. I wish the system had a bit more kick.

Also strange that on the limited you lose the backup sensors. That's really irritating.

I think you lose the sensors, because you gain the camera.

Why do some people seem to really dislike the Entune?

You gain the big screen camera on the Limited. On the '10-11 SR5 and TE non-Nav, you had the backup camera in the mirror. I think the camera is in the 6" screen with the '12 SR5 w/ Entune. I don't know if it keeps the backup sensors or not.

The '12 4Runner is basically a transitional year for head units. They got the base Entune into the base trucks but the full feature Entune hasn't been implemented in the 4Runner like it has the '12 Camry, Prius, Prius v, etc.

Here is a link showing the different units available.

Choose Multimedia System

The Premium HDD Nav with Entune is basically the next gen of the optional nav available on the Limited models. I figure for '13, we'll see the top trim units available for the Limited. We might even see a mid-cycle refresh.

Thanks Quentin.

I see that HDD system is showing as available on 2013 Landcruisers so makes sense it'd show-up on the 4runner for '13.

It's a tough call when we're this close to the new models (I'd guess late July as they are still producing '12's at the factory for June delivery I understand). That is, do I wait and see or pull the trigger on a '12. Hmmm. We'll see.

If you have the patience to wait til the 13's are out I would wait. Very good chance of a mid gen refresh if they follow suite with the last generations.
Here's what was changed for the mid gen refresh(after 3 years) for the 4th Gen and it was substantial.......Toyota 4Runner History 2006
Actually made me buy one in 2006!

Thanks Harper7. Yeah, my instinct is to wait and see what 2013 models bring. Hey, if it's nothing special I can always get a 2012 closeout.

Since I really will keep this one for a LONG time, I may as well see what appears in the new models.

Voice Recognition Commands and album art not in JBL NAV

Just took delivery of 13 T4R LE. Spent the $ on the "upgrade" JBL NAV 15 spkr system vs the standard 6.1" 8 spkr audio that is normal stock on an LE. Some key things I learned the hard way:
1) Voice Recognition commands on JBL are almost non existent as compared to standard install. Ex: no voice command options for IPOD control such as "Play artist xxx" or "Play playlist yyy".
2) Album art does not display on IPOD connection as shown at the website:
Toyota Entune Support
3) Entune simply does not exist on this unit, despite what the Toyota e-brocure for 2013 stated (interior specs).

So while I am not really upset about loss of entune app's itself, it does seem to me that paying extra for an upgrade audio system should not reduce the user experience and/or functionality. When compared to other manufacturer's infotainment systems such as Jeep GC Overland, or Ford Explorer Ltd, the T4R upgrade has no system.

On the other hand, the positive: the audio quality in the JBL 15 spkr system sounds extremely well to my average audiophile ears. And I presume would be better than the standard install, but I never auditioned the standard install.

Just my experiences, other comments/suggestions/thoughts very welcome

I have the JBLs in my '08 SE and that sounds so much better than the Entune in the '14 TEP I just test drove. The Entune sounded like, well, a cheaper system. Muffled, tinny and flat.

I am totally crushed that the JBL isn't available on the TEP... It just might make me wait even longer to trade...

Resurrected thread but I can't resist expressing my disdain. ...Because I bought my truck new two months ago and entune is already outdated and I see no hopes for an update I wish to be proven wrong but seems like a waste of money so far. The aftermarket JVC I bought for my old truck had more shelf life at half the cost....needless to say pissed. It not working correctly should be covered under 3 year 36k warranty IMO. Most of the issues are fixed or appear to be fixed in the 2014 entune.
