I have my 2016 4runner .. I change the eng oil 7500 miles .. I do all the work. I change the oil in November 12 months . the Mobil synthetic dexos2 zinc plus 0-20wt .. does not loose oil .. oil looks like new. I drain the engine 45 min.. inspect the filter has no debris ...
I did not go to get free oil changes at Toyota .. many have issues...
I have 1984/1996/2000 GM vehicles still working and no major failures .oil looks great.. I use a pure one or a wix oil filter on my GM vehicles.
I sold my 1983 GM sedan at 375K miles no issues no eng/drive train issue..

Fantastic “how to” thread. Well done!
Lot’s of good hints and ideas too.

I’ll look this over when I do my next change as well. This would make me more organized.

I did add a Fumoto oil drain valve already. No more crush washer and cleaner to drain.

Anyone finding the OEM Toyota oil hard to find? Went to my dealer today and they are out of the Toyota 0W20 oil. They had Mobil1 available. I asked what they are using in the shop (bulk oil) and they said Mobil1. They said they couldn't even get the Toyota oil from another dealer right now. Is the Toyota branded oil stuck on a ship waiting to be offloaded?

Yup. That's why I bought 36 quarts when I found it on sale online. Plus a 10 pack of filters

You don’t need to use Toyota oil.
A lot of dealers and online Toyota dealers don’t even stock it.

Thx. Yep, I'm awake that I don't need to use the Toyota oil, and Mobil1 is my 2nd choice. I was just surprised at the apparent unavailability of the Toyota oil, although I guess I shouldn't have been given the ongoing supply shortages. Could be a fun month, as all 3 of my vehicles are due oil changes.

One small warning--I replaced my filter housing with the older style metal Like my 2013 tundra, and it was an aftermarket Doorman part I purchased on Rock auto. I kept the guts/ perferated internal housing from the original and transferred it to the aftermarket aluminum Doorman. The machined lip just above the O Ring of the metal housing was too large to seat properly. After a quick hit with emory cloth on the aluminum it has served me well for the last 20K miles and will not break like the plastic housing. Just needed a quick mod to work properly.

Yep, same thing as my brother-in-law. His 2017 has seen him do a half dozen oil changes himself. He still has the OE filter housing and he did strongly advise the cap socket tool to prevent damage. Almost time for my 2021's first oil change ... now time to go get one of those tools.

I am not sure if the website isnt up to date, but they stop at 2018 for the tool.
It looks solid.
I will be doing my first 4runner oil change soon. What an interesting oil change.. Toyotas are simple to work on, yet they make this oil change a little Un-Toyota.

The Motiv tool is excellent but it’s funny to see even experienced mechanics on YouTube use it incorrectly by not aligning the fins in the slots.
Btw, I’ve still got the OEM assembly on my 2010 and I think I’m up to 18-20 oil changes.

Agreed, I always laugh when they don't use it or align it correctly. But I love my Motiv tools, the filter drain tool and the filter wrench are key for doing your own oil changes

Their funnel is real nice. Makes things look more professional and cleaner. Not that a regular funnel isnt good enough...

Nice writeup! After the first two free oil changes at the dealer I have done them, I think I have done 9 by now.
