Downsizing 20's to 17's

I've got a 2010 with 20" rims and I'm looking to downsize to 17's and get a bigger tire. Does anyone have any information on if it can or can't be done? I've heard there could be issues with speedometer and linkage among others.

I'm not an avid four wheeler but do go to the mountains a lot. Just don't like the way these lower profile wheels and tires perform when I do go off road. I like the look of a slightly bigger tire too.

Any info would be great, thanks!

Just take off the 20" and put on the stock 18" and you're done. Both tires in stock sizes have the same circumference, so there is no issue with the speedometer or anything else.

I'm not sure if 17" wheels will fit over the 5th gen brakes, but I'm guessing someone here has already tried it.

17" wheels are fine. Anything smaller won't clear the brakes.

I swapped the 20" rims that came on my 2011 Ltd. for some 17" SR5 rims that I picked up on Ebay. I did it for the exact same reason: to get a bigger/different tire. Not a HUGE tire, mind you, but something akin to what you described - moderate off-road use, etc.

I haven't had any issues or problems.

Ron

Thanks for all the feedback everyone!

I keep seeing backspacing measurements when looking at rims. Do I need to be concerned with this and what about the TPMS sensors. Can I use the ones on the tires now?

Someone is unsure of OEM sizes of rims. In the US we don't have a 18" OEM option for the 5th gen (17" or 20"), but I bet you could find some other 18" Toyota rims from a GX460 or 4th Gen. if you really want 18".
