Trd replacement air intake tube
I was wandering through the internet today and found that you can buy the component parts for the trd cold air intake. Has anybody tried mating the trd replacement air intake tube to the stock air box. It appeares that replacing the stock air intake tube and air filter with the trd tube and filter will have the same effect as buying the entire trd cai. Any thoughts???

What effect are you looking for other than the "bling factor"....
CAI's don't really do a whole lot for performance, there may be some increases there, but nothing that you would ever notice. Gas mileage increase, who knows...
If you want to don something with the intake, I would say go with an AFE drop in... saves some money, washable, etc. I've ran one for 27,000 miles no with no issues. I wash it every oil change.

I'm looking at eliminating the baffles and any flow restriction in the tube w/o having to buy a complete CAI. I plan on installing a K & N filter in the stock air box. I bet its the same as the TRD filter. I'm not concerned with the "bling"... always felt that function was more important than form. I had a K & N intake in my Tahoe (sold when I got the 4Runner) and run one on my Harley.

Agreed, function over form.
Like I said before, I don't believe your gonna gain much at all from that. The Dual VVT-i 4.0 in our trucks is tuned up pretty good. Save your money for the TRD supercharger.

Bumping this thread to see if anyones done this or found another replacement tube.
I understand 100% that without a tune any perceived gains are likely placebo. I 100% want to do this just to get some induction noise into the cabin. My goal is with a mild exhaust to get a better idea of what my engine rpm is without looking down at the tach.
I hate that the engine fan is louder than everything else.

Meh... Trd doesn't look like it will work. Maf sensor port would need a block off and it's the wrong bend. Maybe something else will pop up.

Airaid sells just the intake tube for the third gen. So the idea is reasonable. I had the third gen airaid intake tube, just the tube.
Nope, it didn't do much but I like the cleaner look. I also would like a 5th gen intake tube.
Don;t think the TRD will fit the stock box? The TRD box egress is centered while the stock box egress is off-center.

I installed the kit today and very happy with it. Makes the motor sound less like a blender, I'm guessing it's from removing the resonator. You could just go to the plumbing section in a home improvement store and find plugs/caps for the stock pipe. Then get a oiled filter of choice... Actually I suggest getting two. This way you can prep one and let the oil drain off it before install,to keep it out of the MAF. I just run the stock filter as it works better on fine particles.

You can also get dry performance filters too (better idea if you live in the desert). I will prob just stay stock tho my truck spends a lot of time in dust.

Bumping this yet again because one day someone is going to get their shit together a make a damn replacement pipe. Something I've done on all my vehicles to get some extra throttle feedback (auditory/vibrations not power). I don't want an exhaust and I'm not looking for a $400+ solution.
Here's what I found with today's revist.
HPS makes a replacement pipe for the Taco.:
Taco Engine bay:
4runner engine bay :
Wondering if the oem pipes between the two truck are the same diameter or not.
Not crazy about what HPS is selling because I feel like it's about $100 over priced but it seems like a possibility at a glance.

I found the intake pipe for $28. Whether or not it fits to the OEM airbox is the question. Removing the baffles for $28 isn't a bad idea. Who's wants to be the guinea pig and test fit?
Genuine OEM TRD Air Intake Tube Part# PTR03-89100-AA Fits 2010-2012 Toyota: Up To 35% Off On Every Order And Guaranteed Fit When You Enter Your VIN | OEM Genuine Parts
Well crap.. just noticed that it's for 2010 - 2012.
